Newgrange - entry to this Neolithic passage tomb, Boyne Valley, County Meath, Ireland. Built c.3200 BCE, it predates Stonehenge & the pyramids of Giza. Newgrange was built with astronomical alignment. On the morning of the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, the central chamber is briefly illuminated by the rising sun's rays coming through the passage.

How did our Neolithic ancestors manage to build these massive tombs in Ireland, carting 16-ton stones from miles away, in such a way that they would remain watertight and intact for more than 5,000 years? That’s just one of the many mysteries surrounding these marvels of engineering, which are hundreds of years older than Egypt’s pyramids and Stonehenge.
