We are finished our unit on Charlotte's Web. As a treat to end the unit, my class will have a mini-fair on Friday. There will be chips, cotton candy, pickles, candy, cookies, and cupcakes. Students will watch the movie picnic-style, completed with goodies to eat and blankets to lay on. I want to give a shout out to my awesome parents for providing everything!!!! Throughout this week, my students completed several end-of-the-book activities. They redesigned the cover of the novel, created paper bag characters, made a sharing board, and researched either a type of pig or spider. Don't worry, I have some freebies for you too!!! I have decided to upload all the questions for Charlotte's Web to TpT. I have a set of questions for each chapter. I also made tests (6 in all). I will email a copy of the tests and questions to the first 5 people who comment below and leave an email!!! I decided against selling the tests on TpT because parents may get their hands on them! Charlotte's Web chapter questions The first activity you will see is our spider and pig research reports. Students were given either a type of pig or spider to research. I used the spider and pig report pages from my Charlotte's Web Unit. The unit is free so feel free to download your report forms. After researching the pig/spider, students completed a flee map. For those familiar with Write From the Beginning, you will recognize the flee map. A flee map is a way for students to organize their writing. Students color code their boxes to help when writing the paragraphs. Grab your free copy of the flee map (HERE). You can grab your copy of the pig and spider stationary (HERE) and (HERE). Research Report *This part was done at home. Flee Map *Each colored box is a different paragraph. Flee Map Link Here Rough Draft *I corrected the rough drafts in school. Final Essay *Students made spiders and pigs from construction paper. Check out the other finished essays. They came out great!!! Remember: If you want to grab your free copy of the questions and all 6 tests, comment below with your email. The first five people will receive a free copy!!

I can't believe this school year is almost over! I have only 5 days of school left, Friday is our last day. I will miss my kiddos dearly but am super excited to start my summer vacation. Next school year will bring so many changes for me~~new partner teacher (SUPER excited!!), best friend coming back to teach at my school (YAHOO!!), my baby girl is starting 8th grade at another school (BOO HOO!), and 3rd grade will switch classes next year (SCARED!!)!! I will need the summer to get ready for my 27+ new students next year. I love planning over the summer and will need this summer to prepare for switching classes. Switching won't be so bad, I will teach religion to 2 classes. I am really happy about not teaching science and social studies too!! I always have a hard time fitting these 2 subjects in on a daily basis. My students have been really busy these last 2 weeks doing my favorite all-time writing assignment~~~My Favorite Summer Vacation! I just love this writing and really LOVE how the finished essays turn out. Check them out below. You can click (HERE) to download the sunglasses template. You need to make 2 copies and tape them together. See below!! This year I decided to give out Candy Awards. I literally ran all over town looking for each type of candy. I even had my honey helping me (He was so cute going from store to store!)! I had the hardest time finding Lifesavers (Who would believe that?!). You can download your own set of Candy Awards from Tunstall's Teaching Tidbits. I found these awards during the summer and have been saving them all year. Check them out below! I can't wait to share them with my students tomorrow!!! Here is just a taste of what the awards look like! They are precious!!!! Here is a fun project I did with my class last week. I found this idea on Pinterest and just HAD to try it with my class! Look at the pictures below and try to see the shape! I am in LOVE with this!!
What a CRAZY week and weekend!!! We are finished with our state testing and school fair. Yahoo!!! This past week consisted of finishing up state testing, teaching students a dance for the fair performance, painting a picture for the fair silent auction, (see picture below), making over 50 candy apples for the sweets booth, and practicing for the teacher fair performance! Yes, I am one of 11 teachers who actually dances in front of the parents and students at the fair!!! I think the best part of dancing would be attending all practices after school!!! enjoying the fair candy apples for the sweet booth silent auction: each student painted a different picture on the canvas End-of-the-Year Linky Party With state testing & the fair behind me, I can start preparing for the end of the year. I am linking up with Clutter-Free Classroom and sharing my end-of-the-year ideas. I can't believe May is right around the corner!! Where did the school year go? I still need to put together portfolios and make a power point presentation. I love making a power point from all of the pictures I take during the school year. I must admit that it takes over a week to construct because I always find a way to mess up something! It never fails that every year I make some kind of mistake!!! For the portfolios, I save the students' work all year and use sheet protectors in binders. I like to put the work in order from the first to last day for the parents. I put all work in sheet protectors. The parents appreciate the organization of the work so much because it saves them the time of doing it over the summer. Also, students complete a summer writing activity. This writing activity is my favorite one of the year. The creativity that flows from the students' brains is amazing! Students are asked to write about a summer trip they have taken already or plan on taking. After editing the rough draft, students write the final copy of the essay on sunglasses. Students glue glasses on large white construction paper and draw a picture around the glasses. I was amazed the first time I did this with my class. I did not instruct them to draw a person. The end results were more than I imagined! summer writing summer writing end-of-the-year presentation set up Click (HERE) to grab your sunglasses template. What a post! Please check out Clutter-Free Classroom Project and join the End-of-the-Year Linky Party! With much appreciation,

charlotte's web activity
Summer means it is County Fair time and we found a great go-along book, Charlotte’s Web. I read the book aloud to my seven-year-old. For my five and two year olds, I found a picture book version, called Some Pig, at our local library. What really got us interested in this story was that a local community theatre was doing a play adaptation. My kids are so loving theatre productions right now so we’ve been going to as many as we can afford to buy tickets to. They really enjoyed seeing Charlotte’s Web, the play. There is also a movie, which we found at our local library. Activities to go along with Charlotte’s Web: Spelling and Vocabulary. I found Charlotte’s Web to be a great story for my new reader (Firefly) and my blossoming reader (The Queen Bee). In the story, Charlotte is looking for new words to spell in her web, so I came up with this fun activity for the kids. I drew simple spider webs with white pencil onto dark colored paper using this tutorial and had the kids spell out all of the words that Charlotte spins in her web. They began by sounding out the words on their own first, then by copying the corrected versions. Of course, this inspired them to spell many more words on their webs: their names, the names of other characters in the story, silly words and so on. We made sure to define the words Charlotte came up with and thought of examples of people we know who are radiant and humble, and of course, terrific. Look for spider webs and spiders. If you are lucky, you might even see a fly or other insect all wrapped up in the spider’s silky web, having been anethesized by the spider’s venom, and ready to be her next meal, just as Charlotte explains to Wilbur. We were lucky enough to find that a spider had spun a web on the driver’s side mirror of our car and she had a fly wrapped and ready to go, the first day we spotted her. She spent nearly a week living on our car mirror. When we would drive somewhere, she’d quickly crawl into the plastic casing that surrounds the mirror, taking her prey with her if she had some, and riding safely tucked in. Naturally, we named her Charlotte. We also watched various YouTube videos about these fascinating creatures. Go to the county fair. Our county has one coming up in a couple of weeks. We hope to see the animals and will be on the lookout for the blue ribbon winners, just like the ribbon Wilbur hoped to win in Charlotte’s Web. Images: Charlotte’s Web book from Amazon.

Hiya friends, I'm linking up with Ashley Reed for her Ten Pin Linky Party again this week. This week's theme is Reading Idea Pins. This one was hard for me...I have a Reading/Lang. Arts Board, Word Work Board, Sight Word Board...I've got ideas saved everywhere! I need to better organize my Pinterest boards and maybe combine the Sight Word and Word Work boards. On some pins I'm undecided if they qualify as reading or language arts. Sheesh! I'm an over-thinker, I think :-) Anyway, here are a few pins I really like... 1) Puppy Palooza! Have the kids adopt a pet and read books to their pet for a week during Daily Five. Genious! Love this idea from Tunstall's Teaching Tidbits. 2-3) I loved the idea of a reading fair so much I pinned it twice. Both of these pins are from mommycracked.net. Aren't these reading fair boards adorable? And, I love how the kiddos were required to add story & plot elements (as opposed to the scientic method for a science project). 4) This idea for a biography or character book report comes from hazelpta.org. It's a money saving alternative to actually dressing up like the person/character. 5-6) I love books for every situation, occassion, or any reason at all. 25 books that teach social skills can be found at cleverclassroomblog.blogspot.com. The 10 anti-bullying books come from ayearofmanyfirsts.blogspot.com. 7) Students are 'texting' their sight words on iPhones, 'typing' words onto iPads, and arranging their iPod playlists in alphabetical order in this pin from mrsbremersk.blogspot.com. Kids are so into technology these days, ya know? 8+) I'm all about a text rich classroom and cute anchor charts to refer to, so here a few that I've pinned that are somehow related to reading. teachertrap.blogspot.com teaching-with-style.com eberhartsexplorers.blogspot.com julieballew.com lh4.ggpht.com teacherificfun.blogspot.com lifeinfirstgrade1.blogspot.com.au In other news, did I tell ya'll that I bought a laminator? LOOOOVE! Less than $20 on Amazon. It works at a leisurely pace, but it is soooo nice to just sit at my kitchen table and laminate away. No lines. No cost per foot. No turning it in and getting it back a week later. I've already gone through my first box of 100 laminating pouches so I had to order 100 more!!! Have a happy Fourth of July!

This is a classic children's book about a spider and a pig that become friends. This is a great book for the classroom because it teaches that even though you might have differences, you can still be compassionate and loving towards everyone.
