It is not without reason that Greater Spitzkoppe is dubbed 'Namibia’s Matterhorn'. Its weathered shapes, some of them bizarre, and its surroundings attract scores of visitors and photographers. At 1,728 metres this mountain is also one of the big challenges for rock-climbers. The high red sand dunes called Sossusvlei are located in the central Namib Desert, within Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia. This surrealistic clay pan is fed by the Tsauchab River that flows through the Namib every 5 to 10 years. Thanks to the infrequent floods the pan is covered by unique camel thorn, native to the drier parts of Southern Africa. Photo By aftab via Cyndy Jostiak

Dune 45 in Sossusvlei is one of the most beautiful sand dunes in the world. Standing over 170 meters, it is composed of 5 million year old sand that was brought by the Orange River from the Kalahari Desert. It is a star dune. Star dunes are pyramidal sand mounds with slipfaces on three or more arms that radiate from the high center of the mound. They tend to accumulate in areas with multidirectional wind regimes. Star dunes grow upward rather than laterally. (One of the two main reasons for my recent Africa trip, to experience this natural marvel, finally came true on Day 6 =)

https://flic.kr/p/8Ngh7e | Africa - Namibia / Bushmen... | The indigenous people of southern Africa, whose territory spans most areas of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland, Botswana, Namibia, and Angola, are variously referred to as Bushmen, San, Sho, Basarwa, Kung, or Khwe. These people were traditionally hunter-gatherers, part of the Khoisan group and are related to the traditionally pastoral Khoikhoi. Starting in the 1950s, and lasting through the 1990s, they switched to farming as a result of government-mandated modernization programs as well as the increased risks of a hunting and gathering lifestyle in the face of technological development. There is a significant linguistic difference between the northern Bushmen living between Okavango (Botswana) and Etosha (Namibia), extending into southern Angola on the one hand and the southern group in the central Kalahari towards the Molopo, who are the last remnant of the extensive autochthonous San of South Africa. The Bushmen have provided a wealth of information for the fields of anthropology and genetics, even as their lifestyles change. One broad study of African genetic diversity completed in 2009 found the San people were among the five populations with the highest measured levels of genetic diversity among the 121 distinct African populations sampled

Meeting Namib by Roberto Moiola: My second travel to Namibia I experienced the flying tour over Namibia’s most spectacular scenic wonders which began at the Swakopmund airport in the heart of Namib desert. The aerial flight starts over the Kuiseb River bed & conts. on towards Sesriem & the Sesriem Canyon then to the highest sand dunes in the world at Sossusvlei. These towering dunes are breathtaking, I think that Sossusvlei area is one of the most beautiful place I've ever seen.

SKELETON COAST, Namibia - When you go on a safari here, its not to see the animals (which is a bonus), but to see the the vast sea of sifting sand dune mountains and the treacherous, barren shoreline where shipwrecks and whale bones litter the foggy beaches. The dunes are especially magnificent at sunrise or sunset.

The Skeleton Coast is the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean coast of Namibia and southern Angola. The name is sometimes used to describe the entire Namib Desert coast. The coast is named for the bleached whale and seal bones which covered the shore when the whaling industry was still active, as well as the skeletal shipwrecks of over a thousand vessels. The Bushmen of Namibia refer to the coast as "The Land God Made in Anger".

The Sperrgebiet (also known as Diamond Area 1) is a diamond mining area in south-western Namibia, in the Namib Desert. It spans the Atlantic Ocean-facing coast from Oranjemund on the border with South Africa, to around 45 miles north of Lüderitz, a distance of 320 km (200 miles) north. Mining only takes place in five percent of the Sperrgebiet, with most of the area acting as a buffer zone. Members of the public are banned from entering most of the area, despite the creation of a national park in 2004.

In African folklore the baobab is widely known as the tree that God planted upside down. According to the San (Bushmen) the Great Spirit gave each animal a tree. The hyena received the last tree, a baobab, and was so upset that he planted it upside down! BelAfrique - Your Personal Travel Planner www.belafrique.co.za
