Peach silk dress with evening bodice, French, ca. 1864 I see Elizabeth wearing this under her tree reading with the dress in a circle around her like I always try to get my dresses to do when I'm sitting down in one lol :)
1864 French peach silk gown with and evening bodice. I had to see what an evening bodice was, and it women would actually sometimes have the same dress but with 2 different bodice's an evening and a daytime bodice. Later a designer came up with the idea for making a two piece gown a skirt with 2 different tops which became more of an appeal to woman and cost less.

Pink and cream silk gauze dress, 1800-10. August Auctions: "Pink silk satin Empire bodice and short, puffed sleeves, skirt of cream leno weave gauze brocaded with pink flowers woven en disposition with dense floral design at hem, square neckline and two drawstrings at back, slim skirt with center back gathers, padded satin rouleau hem" This would be a perfect way to do a really nice dress cheaply, silk for the bodice and hem, but gauze for the skirt = less of the expensive fabric.

I had trouble envisioning how my protagonist, Clare Hetton, would dress for evening, a time of day when lighter and more overtly "feminine" fabrics, trims, and clothing were worn. This 1855 French silk dress isn't fully "her," but I think she'd like its subtle colors and the simplicity of that single wide pair of ribbons. And yes, I do think of her as though she's a real person, with likes and dislikes....

c. 1861[-66] [evening] dress, French. Silk. The Met, 1990.198a–d. [Note that 19th-century velvet could be made of either silk or wool. Additionally, 19th c. silk velvet is virtually indistinguishable from modern good-quality cotton velvet. Modern "silk" velvet feels totally different and will not accurately reproduce a 19th c. garment.]
Tea Dress from France, 1861 Metropolitan Museum of Art This stunning black velvet gown was most likely made for a woman in full mourning - a custom that was made popular, even fashionable by Queen Victoria, who entered mourning in this same year of 1861 and continued to wear black for the rest of her life.

Plaid. The Crinoline era is when plaid started to become a fashion trend. Here you can see a plaid pattern incorporated into a dress style you would typically see during this time period. This material most likely is composed of a lot of Taffeta but also has combinations of several different fibers.
Reminds me of an afternoon dress Miss Scarlett would have in her wardrobe!
Plaid and taffeta became very popular during the Crinoline Period

Beautiful hoop skirt dress, 1862. . Greatthat seems details/••••abut sir prized by this. The war was on and every possible yard of fabric was going to the front. There's at least seven yards of fabric in this dress. It could be one left from before the war began, but that seems unlikely.
