      October 1906. Earliest known color photo of the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake. Looking up Market Street to the Ferry Building, with the Flood Building on the left, and the remains of the Call Building on the right at 3rd Street. Steel frame buildings generally perform well in earthquakes, and the Call building was no exception. Unfortunately it was gutted by the great fire, which the Flood Building survived.

    City Hall interior, San Francisco, 1906 - The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was a major earthquake that struck San Francisco and the coast of Northern California at 5:12 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906. Devastating fires broke out in the city and lasted for several days. As a result of the quake and fires, about 3,000 people died and over 80% of San Francisco was destroyed.
