1848- A large quantity of gold is discovered in northern California & thousands of often violently ambitious men pour in to dig it up. Over the next decade, 80% of the "timid & friendly" native population is killed off. In 1850, California will be annexed to the United States as a free state, angering the southeastern slave states. Sutters Mill - Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park - James W. Marshall discovered gold in 1848 on the South Fork of the American River in the valley the Nisenan Indians knew as Cullumah. This event led to the greatest mass movement of people in the Western Hemisphere and was the spark that ignited the spectacular growth of the West during the ensuing decades.
