Chethams Library Is The Oldest Public Library In The English Speaking World

Rare and antique books line the shelves at Chetham Library, which was founded in 1653, making it the oldest public libary in the English speaking world in Manchester, England. Chetham's Library, which was established under the Will of Humphrey Chetham (1580-1653) and is the oldest surviving public library in Britain. Humphrey Chetham's Will stipulated that the Library should be 'for the use of schollars and others well affected'.
