cow shoes used by moonshiners in Prohibition days to disguise their footprints, 1922....25 Incredible Photos From History
Cow shoes used by Moonshiners in the Prohibition days to disguise their footprints, 1922. These were either permanently affixed to the chosen shoes or a crampon of sorts was created bearing the specific animal print.
The May 27, 1922 issue of The Evening Independent carried a story about moonshiners wearing "cow shoes" to trick revenuers -- rather than leaving suspicious footprints leading up to their secret stills, they'd leave innocent-looking hoofprints in the dirt and grass. The New Yorker's "Photo Booth" had a good snap of one of the shoes.

Two Sisters ~ c.1900
..back then, genteel women, young and old, did not 'gild the lily', i.e. wear makeup or such fripperies... however, the one thing they were allowed to take pride in was their hair... remember Jo, in "Little Women", who cuts off and sells her "one true beauty"... ...so simple. Sisters

So pretty - Civil war era
It's Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia when she was still Princess Dagmar of Denmark. She was the wife of Tsar Alexander III and the mother of the ill-fated last Tsar Nicholas II. She escaped to England and Denmark after the Russian Revolution and died in 1928. Her granddaughter Maria Nicolevnea resembles her very much. Maria was not as petite, but the eyes, and her curly dark hair are the same.

These types of business cards were given to men at train stations as they entered town to advertise houses of prostitution. These cards were in popular and open use until the 1930's. The women were called "Soiled Doves" in the Victorian era. During the Civil War there was such a huge epidemic of venereal disease that in one town the army quarantined "doves" on a river boat.
