Presented By: Dr. Tony Attwood Reviewed By: By Lee A. Wilkinson, PhD, NCSP Published/Produced By: Future Horizons Although there has been a dramatic increase in the recognition of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) over the past decade, a significant gender gap has emerged in the diagnosis of milder forms, such as high functioning autism and Asperger syndrome. Statistics indicate that while boys are being referred and identified in greater numbers, this is not the case for girls. This DVD is a conference video that provides a comprehensive presentation of the characteristics and explanation as to why females with autism spectrum disorders are an underidentified and underserved group in our schools and community. In his presentation, Dr. Attwood describes some of unique challenges experienced by women and girls on the spectrum. … Continue reading →

Asperger's Syndrome is often considered a high functioning form of autism which can lead to difficulty in interacting socially, repeat behaviors & clumsiness. It differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic-cognitive development. Physical clumsiness & atypical (peculiar, odd) use of language are frequently reported.

Hans #Asperger quote ^^
As April starts to wrap up, I think it is important to remind everyone about Autism Awareness. Autism now affects 1 in 88 children, and 1 in 54 boys. More children will be diagnosed this year with Autism, than AIDS, diabetes and cancer combined. Autism in the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the U.S, yet they only receive less than 5% of research funding compared to many of the less prevalent other childhood diseases. There is no medical detection or cure at this time. All of these reasons plus so many more are why Autism Awareness is so important. Here are some great quotes about Autism: What would happen if the autism gene was eliminated from the gene pool? You would have a bunch of people standing around in a cave, chatting and socializing and not getting anything done.” ― Temple Grandin, The Way I See It: A Personal Look at Autism & Asperger's Autism (with a capital “A”) to me, says that I accept my child wholly. I celebrate his differences and his quirky-ness. I advocate diversity. I try to empower him. I am proud of his successes, no matter how small they seem. I hope he holds onto the compassion he has in his heart into adulthood. I do not think he needs “fixing”. I am proud that he is my son, and sometimes I am humbled by that very same thought. "I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, It's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, And that enables you to laugh at life's realities." - Dr Seuss Hey, keep staring at me and you just might cure my Autism. Then we can work on YOUR social skills. ‘Normal’ is a dryer setting. If you have met one person with Autism, you have met one person with Autism. I do not suffer from Autism, but I do suffer from the way you treat me. Autism is not a tragedy. Ignorance is the tragedy. People with AUTISM... do not lie, do not judge, do not play mind games. Maybe we can learn something from them. I’m just like everybody else... only different. Source: pepperpottery.blogspot.com via Meredith on Pinterest

Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's/John Elder Robison Ever since he was young, John Robison longed to connect with other people, but by the time he was a teenager, his odd habits had earned him the label “social deviant.” It was not until he was forty that he was diagnosed with a form of autism called Asperger’s syndrome. A darkly funny memoir about a life that has taken him from developing exploding guitars for KISS to building a family of his own.
Ever since he was young, John Robison longed to connect with other people, but by the time he was a teenager, his odd habits—an inclination to blurt out non sequiturs, avoid eye contact, dismantle radios, and dig five-foot holes (and stick his younger brother, Augusten Burroughs, in them)—had earned him the label “social deviant.” It was not until he was forty that he was diagnosed with a form of autism called Asperger’s syndrome. That understanding transformed the way he saw himself—and the wor
12 Amazing Special Needs Stories. I need to add some of these to my reading list!
It's time to sit by the fire and enjoy some leisurely reading. Not like I'll be doing any leisurely reading with a newborn, but I figured I would share some of the books I've read in the past few months that I've really enjoyed. 1. BEAUTIFUL BOY This is a touching story of a father's life with his drug addicted son. Very touching and insightful novel. 2. BOSSYPANTS Oh Tina Fey! You always know how to make me laugh. A great, lighthearted book that will keep a smile on your face. 3. BORN ON A BLUE DAY Such an amazing story of a brilliant human. Because I teach special education, I'm often drawn to books about individuals with disabilities. This book was fascinating! 4. DARK PLACES After reading Gone Girl, I couldn't wait to read more by Gillian Flynn. This thriller will keep you up late turning the pages! 5. LOOK ME IN THE EYE I love all books by Augusten Burroughs, so when I found out his brother, John Elder Robinson, wrote a book, I knew I had to read it! 6. A MILLION LITTLE PIECES This book is one of my favorites. Years ago it came out that the author wasn't truthful when writing this, but just go into it as if it were a fictional book. Regardless, it's a great read and remains one of my favorites. 7. WHITE GIRL PROBLEMS OMG I couldn't stop laughing when reading this! It's ridiculously funny! 8. OUTLIERS This is one of the most interesting books I've read. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author, Malcolm Gladwell. 9. REVENGE WEARS PRADA I'm a huge fan of Lauren Weisberger and was super excited when this book came out! It was fun tying up loose ends from The Devil Wears Prada. 10. WHAT ALICE FORGOT Love this author and this cute, girly book! A great, easy, fun read! What are some of your favorite books to read on a cold day? Looking for more book recommendations? This page has been created by a early childhood teacher in New Zealand who's embarking on a professional and personal learning journey. The goal? To become an outstanding Specialist Teacher in the area of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
For the answer to this question, I turned to some information from Tony Attwood, a renowned expert psychologist in the area of Asperger’s syndrome. “The answer is a resounding ‘Yes.'” according to Dr. Attwood. After many years of clinical experience, he has found that explaining the diagnosis to the child with Asperger’s syndrome is extremely …

Signs of Autism....April is Autism Awareness month not Jan. AUTISM is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal & non-verbal communication, & by restricted & repetitive behavior. The diagnostic criteria require that symptoms become apparent before a child is 3 yrs. old. It affects information processing in the brain by altering how nerve cells & their synapses connect & organize; how this occurs is not well understood.

Signs of Autism....April is Autism Awareness month not Jan.
An autism sequencing consortium led by researchers from the Broad Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, and six other organizations has searched for autism-related mutations in the fraction of the human genome that codes for proteins.Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are believed to have genetic and environmental origins, yet in only a modest fraction of individuals can specific causes be identified. Fewer than half of the cases investigated in this study (46.3%) carry a missense or nonsense de novo variant, and the overall rate of mutation is only modestly higher than the expected rate. In contrast, the proteins encoded by genes that harboured de novo missense or nonsense mutations showed a higher degree of connectivity among themselves and to previous ASD genes as indexed by protein-protein interaction screens. The small increase in the rate of de novo events, when taken together with the protein interaction results, are consistent with an important but limited role for de novo point mutations in ASD, similar to that documented for de novo copy number variants. Genetic models incorporating these data indicate that most of the observed de novo events are unconnected to ASD; those that do confer risk are distributed across many genes and are incompletely penetrant (that is, not necessarily sufficient for disease). The results support polygenic models in which spontaneous coding mutations in any of a large number of genes increases risk by 5- to 20-fold. Despite the challenge posed by such models, results from de novo events and a large parallel case–control study provide strong evidence in favour of CHD8 and KATNAL2 as genuine autism risk factors.Three original papers are here: http://www.nature.com/nature/index.html | Amazing Science

The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome
When I first started writing about autism and Asperger’s syndrome, I discovered The Complete Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome at my local library. It soon became an indispensible reference and I recently purchased my own copy. The author, Tony Attwood, is a clinical psychologist with more than 25 years experience and has worked with over 2000 people with Asperger’s syndrome. His book is a combination of facts and figures along with true life stories which make it an easy read. It is divided into 15 chapters, and topics include teasing and bullying, sensory sensitivity, life after school, and long-term relationships. It is an excellent reference book and also contains a list of resources, books and websites about Asperger’s syndrome. It covers all stages of a person’s life and will be a great comfort and help to parents who have dozens of questions about their child’s future. Here is a link to an article I wrote where I used The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome as a reference: Helping People with Asperger's to Make Friends
