Sebastian Giacobino - This is no mermaid, more like a jaws inspired sea hag, but it's still pretty cool.

'Marine Monster' by Sebastian Giacobino - but I would call it Drowning Death, because she is clearly death, not a sea monster.
Marine Monster by Sebastian Giacobino - I sometimes feel like this is what's under the murky water...
Marine Monster by Sebastian Giacobino-- Sirens; this is kind of how I imagine mermaids, if they existed.
Sebastian Giacobino - Now, that is one bloody scary siren! Somewhere along the literary and mythological road, mermaids and sirens got confused into one creature: a half-woman, half-fish creature known for her beautiful singing voice. Originally, it was only the mermaid that was a half-human, half-fish creature, and a singing voice wasn’t mentioned in early myths. Sirens were the singers, and they were actually half-woman, half-bird creatures.

Giant Squid Captured On Video For First Time; Japanese Scientists Found 'Kraken' 2,000 Feet Underwater
An illustration from the original edition of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea depicting a giant squid by Alphonse Marie de Neuville
In Norwegian sea folklore, the Kraken is an enormous sea monster which would sometimes attack ships and feed upon the sailors. It was supposed to be capable of dragging down the largest ships and when submerging could suck down a vessel by the whirlpool it created. It is part octopus and part crab, although others refer to it as a cuttlefish or giant squid. The eponymous species may have been the source of such legends.
Illustration fron the book 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea by Jules Vern. Akkorokamui A 19th-century illustration of a giant squid Called the Akkorokamui in Japan, Kraken in Europe, or simply the giant squid in other parts of the world, this cryptid is equally terrifying by any name. Imagine being a sailor and seeing a nest of huge tentacles slithering their way aboard your ship before pulling you and your entire vessel beneath the waves.

Sea monsters - the idea that something that big could still be out there somewhere is terrifying don't you think?
"We asked the captain what course of action he proposed to take against a beast so large, terrifying and unpredictable. He hesitated to answer, and then said judiciously: 'I think I shall praise it.' "From Voyages made in the years 1788 and 1789 from China to the northwest coast of America. Italian. Via Peacay" This reminds me of the childrens book, "Professor Wormbog in Search for the Zipperump-a-zoo."
From Voyages made in the years 1788 and 1789 from China to the northwest coast of America. Italian. I'm in love with old ink illustrations from this century. The artists would often draw from rough description rather than direct reference...OR they'd draw something upon first encountering it ( in this case I'm assuming it was a Narwhal or a seal). I love the newness of their interpretations of beasts...sort of innocent and drastically anatomically incorrect. Kind of how I draw haha!
