Best Ideas for a Quick Kitchen Refresh Text by: Annette Gray, Editorial Contributor Photo By: John M. Hall; Designed By: Stuart Disston Kitchen remodels can be both costly and time-consuming—bad news for a homeowner who is tired of their outdated, poorly functioning space and is craving  a change right away. Do not fret though—it’s entirely possible to refresh aspects of the kitchen, resulting in a quick facelift and adding years of use until the time when a complete overhaul is in the budget. Strategic Planning When considering a partial redesign, you should first identify the component of the room that, if changed, will have the greatest visual impact. Flooring and cabinetry are two likely areas; lighting, backsplash, and wall color are all accents that will help create a standout space. Don’t feel that you have to do everything at once. Alterations can be tackled in layers, allowing for flexibility in timing and expense. Wood Restore Refinishing existing hardwood floors will transform them—and save you the cost of replacing them. Enlist a kitchen designer or interior designer to help you select a new color for re-staining your hardwood floors and tie it in with a fresh wall color and newly installed backsplash. Bring your current cabinetry into the picture, pairing new hardware with restored, refinished wood surfaces. Floor Replacement If you do decide to install new floors, choose an updated flooring material like bamboo, cork, solid or engineered hardwood, or ceramic. Linoleum today is vastly different than the popular choice of the 1950s. Now, it’s an environmentally friendly choice, composed of linseed oil, cork dust, wood flour, tree resins, ground limestone and pigments. An unconventional yet highly flexible option is concrete. It can be polished, stained, stamped, colored, stenciled, and heated. Go to for inspiration for using this versatile material. Lighten Up Outdated lighting can contribute to a dreary appearance and is a simple update. Replace existing fixtures with contemporary alternatives or add a fixture where none existed before. To provide adequate illumination, lighting should appear in three ways: ambient, task, and accent. Well-placed task lighting, like under cabinet lights, is essential to a high-functioning cook’s kitchen. Track, pendant, or recessed lighting is a good choice over workstations, such as with cooking and prepping areas. Better Backsplash An instant brightener is to install a new backsplash, a job that is relatively low cost but that provides a powerful focal point. Some backsplash choices include slate, glass, beadboard, stainless steel, ceramic tile, tin tiles, and marble. Two materials can be used, offering not only visual appeal, but also creating a separation of task spaces. Bring an upscale look to your kitchen by selecting classic marble, or pair eco-friendly recycled glass tile with your modern stainless appliances. Parting Advice Whether you opt for a few or many layers to your update, refreshing and rejuvenating your current kitchen will breathe new life into the work of feeding your family and entertaining friends.
