Hello Everyone! A couple of weeks ago we had the opportunity to go to a little science workshop. Thanks to our science instructional specialist, we learned some ways to "fit it all in." An emphasis was made to incorporate and organize vocabulary into our science/reading lessons. We also learned a fun way to store science items. Well, I got busy and reorganized my science notebook pages, beginning of the year set up lessons, and vocabulary. I also took the storage idea and made it fit with the notebooks. I can't wait to share with the kiddos! Here are a few pics from the 60+ page unit! Student science notebook cover. Science Saver- to store vocabulary cards and other treasures! Over 100 vocabulary words included If you are at all interested in this little set up unit for science notebooks, you simple need to click here!! :) I hope this helps you in your quest to organize your science curriculum and student notebooks. Let me know what you think, or if there is something I need to fix. I do read all the comments, and try hard (not always successful) to get back to you if you have questions. I hope you're having a great week! Thanks for stopping by for a peek! Joyfully! Nancy
Hello Everyone! Just a quick post tonight. I've got to get ready for our 4th of July celebration!! Among so many other things, I love teaching science to my sweeties! I have posted many things already that we have done in science, but I realized I hadn't posted about how we organize all of our recording sheets, observations, and explorations. We keep everything in our Science Notebook (just a brad pocket folder). At the very foundation of our teaching of science is establishing an environment that promotes inquiry and create an investigative mindset in our kiddos. Our first unit of study is "Scientists and their Investigations." I have reworked our Notebook cover and created some beginning of the year "Scientist" activities, including "What do scientists do?" "What do I want to learn?" and a few other things. Throughout the year we will add more to our notebook. I hope this helps you get started! Just print these off, punch some holes and start the exploration! If you are one of my kiddos reading this (or parents), don't forget that you can bring your notebook to the zoo the next time you go, In the children's pavillion, you can show the keeper your notebook and he will give you points to be used for trading in on some amazing science specimens for you to keep!! So cool!! For your free 8 page Science Notebook starter unit, click here! Okay! I'm off to make some yummy munchies for tomorrow!!! Happy fourth y'all!! Joyfully! Nancy

Want to do a fun lab to reinforce the scientific method, measurement, and graphing? Check out my Balloon science Lab! Note: I created this lab my first year of teaching and have tweaked it ever since. When I went back to search for pictures of it... I realized the kids in this picture are graduated high school now. Wow! I created this lab as part of my Grade 6 "Scientific Method" unit and also used it in my Grade 7 resource room science class. It reinforces the steps of the scientific method and provides students much needed practice in metric measurement and graphing. I found that my Grade 6 students had little exposure to the scientific method and line graphs....this lab provides the students with specific focus on precise measurement and graphing. I was able to incorporate mini-lessons on measurement and graphing very effectively with this! Materials you will need (in addition to this lab): • balloon (1 per student) • measuring tape (metric) (1 per student pair) • graph paper In this lab, students will create a hypothesis regarding the rate of change of the balloon's circumference. Students will work in partners to blow up balloons one breath at a time. Students will record data, graph data, and complete a conclusion. The conclusion contains sentence starters to support students in writing conclusions without using "I". They really have a lot of fun with this one!! Management note: Require the students to throw out the balloon all in one trash can before returning to their seats to complete their conclusions. You'll thank me later. ;) A Middle School Survival Guide
Teaching DNA? Your students will LOVE making DNA models out of candy! All you need: *colored marshmallows (i recommend letting them sit out and get stale for a few hours!!) *twizzlers *tooth picks *towel or plates for the desks *directions #1 OR directions #2 *rubric (coming soon!) Materials: Under Construction: Ta'Da! Final Product: This can be extended by "unzipping" and replicating the DNA... View more Life Science ideas from A Middle School Survival Guide...
Come on over to A Middle School Survival Guide to check our a "new" science lab! It is a simple and fun hands-on lab for students that has been a big hit in my classroom for a few years! It is a hands on lab where students build two sizes of parachutes and "race" them. My favorite things about this lab are the teamwork required to make the parachute, the sharing of jobs required to test the paractures ("timer" and "parachute dropper") and the incorporation of math skills (collecting data in a chart, finding the average, graphing etc). Part I: The Construction: It all starts with the students each bringing in the plastic shopping bag and penny. (All you need to provide is scissors, rulers, the string, and timers.) They then independently build two sizes of parachutes (seen above). Part II: The Race By "race", I mean experiment by conducting 5 trials of each parachute, making sure to release them from the same height each time and accurately time. Followed by calculating the average time and speed. And possibly graphing the data. But is sounds a lot more fun to say "race", doesn't it? Come on over to read more!

Create an interactive science notebook for students to keep throughout the whole year. Dedicate each page to something that they are learning for the day; such as Solar Energy, then the next day Wind Energy, etc. At the top can be a warm-up question, and by the end of the lesson they should come up with their own answer! - HM

science interactive notebook pictures from Middle School Science math & vocab interactive notebook pictures from Frogs and Cupcakes This year I am looking to use interactive notebooks this year in math and science. Middle School Science has some great resources for using SCIENCE NOTEBOOKS here and here and here. Tales of Frogs and Cupcakes has some great resources for using MATH NOTEBOOKS here available for purchase. I plan to organize the composition notebooks in two of the "organization stations" seen below. This will allow the students a place to keep their notebooks in the classroom permanently & easy access to the notebooks as they enter the classroom. I like it because at a glance I can see whose notebook isn't there before they leave (who forgot to put it away). Bought them here on amazon for about $30 each. I plan to keep materials for creating the notebooks accessible at all times. These are the fancy-smancy lakeshore brand, mine are just the dolla' store brand. Nonetheless, I will fill these with glue sticks and scissors for notebook creating. I am thinking I will limit the decoration of the notebooks, but theres always the art corner...

I have created some interactive notebook pages which you can use to complete this activity with your students. Here is another idea from my science notebook. Inside our notebooks we put models of the earth revolving around the sun and rotating on its axis. Just like reflection and refraction, students can easily mix up rotate and revolve. The students glued an earth to the edge of a strip of paper. They used a brad to connect the strip of paper, the sun, and the notebook page. Then we wrote the definition for revolve, orbit and the length of 1 revolution beside the model. This next year, I would like to add the moon to this model. For the bottom part, the students needed to see a visual of the day/night cycle. We turned the earth on its axis and glue it down. Then drew the line where day/night meet. This page is meant to model rotation. Each student received a view of the earth from the top. We attached a brad through the north pole and marked which way the earth spins. We added the definitions of rotate, axis and axial tilt. There is also a line showing where day/night meet. I had this all set up before class so the students could see what we were aiming for. But I also did another as we went through it together. This corresponds with Science TEKS 5.8C and it is partly a review from early grades. Next year a I need to add a page that shows how the sun moves across the sky during the day. If anyone has a page in a science notebook they think could work, let me know.
