It is also good way to come up with different adjectives they can use when writing. 5.L.5 Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. (Use the relationship between particular words (e.g., synonyms, antonyms, homographs) to better understand each of the words.)

synonyms - What a great visual! you can have the simple meaning of the word, and then put the most vibrant synonym at the end of the strip!

Synonym Rolls~ The common word goes in the middle, and students write 10-12 synonyms along the swirly lines. Color it in lightly with cinnamon and glaze colors and you have a yummy display.

The kids write a "generic" word in the center, such as good, nice, big. Then they write more creative adjectives around the swirl.
