Empress of Russia (2 May 1729 – 17 November 1796), was the most renowned and the longest-ruling female leader of Russia, reigning from 9 July1762 until her death at the age of 67. She was born in Stettin, Pomerania, Prussia as Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg, and came to power following a coup d'état and the assassination of her husband, Peter III, at the end of the Seven Years' War. Russia was revitalised under her reign.
"Lady Mundirnye" dress introduced by Catherine II as a female version of the uniforms of military units, and combined the features of the military form with elements of ancient and European women's dress to suit the second half of XVIII century. The Empress appeared in parades and during regimental celebrations in such a dress. The color and ornamentation of this dress is consistent with the Cavalry officer corps of 1764-1796.

Catherine wears a replica of ancient Russian gown prepared for masquerade. Catherine enjoyed Russian style in gowns as it made her body looked thinner but Russian court followed French fashion. The combination of Russian and European styles in great gowns of women appeared only with Catherine's grandson Nikolay I.
