Part I. Francis Marion (c.1732-1795) Born in South Carolina; joined the militia as a captain in 1775. Following the capture of Charleston, South Carolina, by the British, in May of 1780, he took to the swamps. Marion led a hard-riding band of guerillas who struck British and Tory supply lines and outposts.
