The first fashion model - Virginia Oldoini, Countess di Castiglione, a Tuscan noblewoman at the court of Napoleon III. Fashion photography has been in existence since the earliest days of photography. In 1856, Adolphe Braunpublished a book containing 288 photographs of Virginia Oldoini, aka Countess. In the first decade of the 20th century, advances in halftoneprinting allowed fashion photographs to be featured in magazines. Fashion photography made its first appearance in French magazines such as La mode practique. In 1909, Condé Nast took over Vogue magazine and also contributed to the beginnings of fashion photography. In 1911, photographer Edward Steichen was "dared" byLucien Vogel, the publisher ofJardin des Modes and La Gazette du Bon Ton, to promote fashion as a fine art by the use of photography

How far we've come! Maintaining Decency in the 1920s That "inspector" is measuring women's swimsuits to make sure they weren't too short. If the women didn't pass, they faced a hefty fine.
1920s ladies had to pay fine if their bathing suits are too short (from '40 historical photos you have to see')

Kodak Girl c.1900. How ironic to see a woman as the image of Kodak when the field historically was dominated by men! It was very hard for me to break into the field in the 1980's as I represented only 11 percent of female photographers in the country. I had older males ask me things like would my period stop me from showing up to work and what was the matter with me...didn't I want children?

A #MaxFactor pencil for drawing stocking seams on during #WW2.
Max Factor pencil for drawing stocking seams. Silk or nylon stockings were in extremely short supply by the summer of 1942. Most women had to find ingenious methods of dressing their legs. Favorites were rubbing gravy browning or shoe polish mixed with cream on to the legs, or just leaving the legs natural & penciling, or painting, on a seam to give the illusion of stockings. The device here was designed by Max Factor & was intended to enable the user to draw the perfect seam.
