Kindergarten Classroom Management/ Discipline- This lets the children know if they are able to talk and at what volume because most teachers are unable to handle keeping the class quiet or talking in their "inside voices". Very good idea I would definitely use this!

I love using my Literacy Station Signs and I Can Task Cards to help me organize my guided reading and literacy station rotations. Since I have an ocean themed classroom, I call them Sea Centers. I have four guided reading groups so I have four literacy stations that the students must complete each week. Each group goes to one station each day. Literacy Station Rotations The literacy station signs are a great visual to post at each station since they match the border to the pocket chart headers and task cards. My students know exactly where they need to be during my guided reading and literacy station block. Below are some examples of the task cards I put at each station. Once they complete their station for that day, they can complete an anchor activity. I have four different colored boxes (I bought them last year from Target) labeled with my 4 reading groups so they know which anchor activities to complete. Each basket contains extension activities to extend their learning. I use a variety of anchor activities, but my favorite ones to use are called Activity Cards for Early Finishers from TheMailbox.com. Anchor Activity Boxes On Friday, students have time to finish any station they did not get to complete during the week. Once they complete all of their stations, they can do Fun Friday! Fun Friday is an opportunity to play a fun reading game of their choice while I do running records on my students. I always remind them to do a whisper voice when I am doing my assessments. This cute voice level chart freebie from Teaming Up to Teach really helps! Below are some of my favorite items from Lakeshore Learning that I use in my literacy stations. My students love these leveled writing activity pockets! They also make it easy for differentiation. The partner scripts were a fun addition to my reading center. Students love taking turns reading the engaging stories and then asking each other questions about the story.

Great visual for behavior plans
Last post about behavior...I promise! Tomorrow I will post a Thanksgiving freebie! So, I've taught the behavior and we've modeled it. Now, I expect it. Remembering that these kids are only 5 or 6 I give reminders of expected behaviors. Using my example from yesterday (kids following me around the room) I say something quick like "have a seat little ducks." Quick & kind reminders are usually all my kids will need once I've taught and modeled. They know (after a few weeks a few months of consistency) that if we take time to talk about it in class then I expect it. However, there are always a few who have to see if I REALLY mean it. When that happens I use our behavior system. At the beginning of the year we had a classroom rabbit so that's where the carrot idea came from. (She has since gone to live on a farm with other bunnies. She was a lot of fun but a lot of work also!) Anyways, all students start on green and if they are making bad choices, even after gentle reminders, I will move their pictures to yellow and tell them we will use 5 minutes of their Choice Time to practice the right choices to make. (The last 25 minutes of my day are devoted to Choice Time.) If they make more bad choices they can have their picture moved again, and so on and so on. Everytime their picture moves it takes 5 more minutes of their Choice Time away. If they get to red and are still not making good choices their next move is to the office or the telephone to call home. I have a "no tolerance" policy on hurting others. If you hit, pinch, scratch, kick, slap, push another student your picture goes below the line immediately. This year I also took 20 Training and have taught the kids above the line/below the line behavior (that's where the yellow line idea came from). It has been really effective with my kids this year (a lifesaver actually!). At the end of the day I report their daily behavior on a calendar we keep in their take home binders. I also write quick notes if they are not on green. For example, If they hit I will write "hit." I tell the parents and the kids that it is the students responsibility to tell the "story" about what happened. I find my students are usually very honest b/c they know their parents will check with me is their story is "fishy." I also do a positive classroom behavior jar called the Warm Fuzzy jar. I've pretaught what Warm Fuzzies and Cold Prickles are. When we fill the jar we earn a Warm Fuzzy reward. I forgot to take a picture of it but it is simply a jar I fill with craft puffs. By this time of the year I find I rarely have to move pictures at all. Last week I only moved 3 pictures and I have a very "strong willed" class this year. The end. Finally.

fifth grade classroom rules | Upper Grades Are Awesome: Day Two - Class Rules and Time Capsules // #ClassRules #Classroom #Teaching
This is an example of classroom rules for a fifth grade classroom. Classroom rules are important because they establish the standards that each student will be held to. I love the idea of having students sign the bottom of the classroom rules poster because it is like a contract that the students agreed to be bound to.
I used to do this. I called it "Classroom Expectations," though. Sounded better. I also broke it down into three columns: Instructor Expectations (what was expected of me as the instructor), Group Expectations (what we expected from each other as a group) and Self Expectations (what they expected of themselves). Simple and effective for classroom management.

I like this poster because for each voice level there is a picture of when it is supposed to be used.
Classroom Management :: Voice level chart. This is good so students don't forget what the numbers for different activities mean.
I will do something similar to this in my future classroom because I believe that students need some idea of what is expected of them. I don't know that I will do this exact voice level chart, but it it good for students to know how loud they should be talking during class. I feel like this is something that many schools use in some form or another. The visuals would especially help younger grades.

#11 Social-Emotional Learning Lessons
Last year my district sent me and other Early Childhood Education teachers to the Social Thinking Conference. It was a great experience, I learned a lot and acquired some goodies! One of them was this Whole Body Listening poster. It is posted in my classroom and I often refer to it in order to remind students of behavior expectation at circle. We go over all of the "body parts" during the first weeks of school and talk about what it looks like to have "looking eyes" or "thinking brain". Since many of my students struggle with receptive communication skills, I try to use as many visuals as possible. We look at photos of people and talk about their body position, their gaze, etc. We also play a game where I look at something or someone and ask the kids to tell me who or what I am "thinking" about. At the end of circle time, I ask one of my Educational Assistants to tell me who they think demonstrated best whole body listening skills. As a reward the child gets to pick out a song, or depending on the month, yoga poses, or animal moves which we do as a group.I got this idea from one of the Tasks Galore books. Song menu

Self-Assessment Anchor Chart
Hello! It's been a busy week! Lots of supply teaching days, I worked extra shifts at my other part-time job, and I'm FINALLY getting back into a workout routine. Before heading back to the gym this afternoon, I thought I'd squeeze in a blog post about some of my favourite classroom anchor charts. Earlier this year, supply teaching was very slow. I don't like sitting around doing nothing - so on some of my days off I made anchor charts for my future classroom. I searched www.pinterest.com for inspiration, and found a few anchor charts that would have been very useful in my Grade 6 class last year. I took these ideas and made my own charts from scratch. I'll show you three of my faves. The first one is a voice level chart. If you've ever had a large class, you know how annoying it can be to keep saying "Use your indoor voice!" This chart has some neat names for its voice levels. I love the idea of "Spy Talk." I think my students would get a kick out of being 'spies' while they work. The next chart is an assessment chart. I am a big proponent of "self-assessment." I talk about it with my students all the time. This chart could be used at the end of a lesson on a post-it note as an exit activity. I'd have students write down where they are on the assessment scale and have them write one or two sentences about why they feel they are at that level. Last but not least, I have a character education anchor chart. It's probably my favourite out of the three. I definitely could have used this last year. As you know, a Grade 6 class is at the beginning point of puberty. Emotions often run high, and blurting out comments without thinking is quite common. This chart allows students to 'think' before they speak. My favourite question is "Is it Inspiring?" I laminated my anchor charts at Staples. NOT a good idea. While they turned out great, Staples costs an arm and a leg for laminating. It defeated the purpose of creating my own charts instead of buying them. So, if I make more charts in the future, I will be holding off on laminating until I am with a school that has a laminating budget. Can't wait to make some more of these anchor charts! I'm always looking for inspiration...
