Gone with the Wind.... Gerald O'Hara: Do you mean to tell me, Katie Scarlett O'Hara, that Tara, that land doesn't mean anything to you? Why, land is the only thing in the world worth workin' for, worth fightin' for, worth dyin' for, because it's the only thing that lasts. Vivian Mary Hartley was born on November 5, 1913, in Darjeeling, India, a strange place for one of the world's most celebrated actresses to be born. She was to live in this beautiful country for the next six years. Her parents wanted to go home to England but because of World War I they opted to stay in India.
How is it that all this lush excess, the opulent room behind her, the pure decadence of that red dress - all we really see, the thing that POPS at us when we see this photo, is Vivien Leigh. Cameron Diaz and Kristen Stewart can't do that, folks.
Scarlett's stand-in, Mozelle Miller. Her duties for Vivien Leigh during the two years of filming were to provide someone the same size and skin color so that cameramen and lighting crews could gauge exposure and adjust lighting without tiring the star. One scene she appears in is where Scarlett walks among the hundreds of wounded and dying Confederate soldiers. Another scene that features her is the when Scarlett is forced to hide from Yankee soldiers by taking cover underneath a bridge.
This is my favorite costume for Scarlet from Gone With The Wind and I think it got the least screen time.
