In 1968, Janis Joplin bought a used white 1965 Porsche 356C cabriolet. Band roadie/artist Dave Richards took her ideas, created and painted Janis’ psychedelic Porsche. Photographed in front of San Francisco's Palace of FIne Arts by the late great Jim Marshall. And also... I have a photo of me in that very spot :)

The late 1960’s were a tumultuous time. The Vietnam war, flower children, drug induced psychedelic trips, The Rolling Stones and the first man on the moon were the headlines of the era. I have a slight obsession with old Stevie, or as one house mate once put it "Nicki, I think Stevie Nicks is your power animal". Yes she is. If only I could belt out a tune like she can....sigh. I do make up for my lack of singing ability with my enthusiastic kitchen (/any where) dancing to the Mac. Rock on Nicks! This is a great little candid clip of Stevie singing along to an early version of Wild Heart. Its so natural and you can really feel what she is singing. Plus she has sweet feathers in her hair!
I guess it’s strange to characterize my feelings for the 1970’s as nostalgic, given that I never experienced the decade first-hand, but no other word seems to capture my longing to experience that brief moment in time. Almost every aspect of the 70’s popular culture intrigues me; from the fashion to the movies, to the music, even the advertising. Taxi Driver Led Zep Bianca Jagger's backstage pass and platforms The 70’s yielded some all-time sartorial highs and lows. There were high-waisted bell bottoms, caftans, fringe, platform shoes and those slinky halter dresses. But then there was also polyester, and all its clingy, synthetic ‘glory’. And honestly the vast majority of the menswear produced during that decade pretty much horrifies me. WTF Yves Saint Laurent's orginal Emilio Pucci's revamp This spring and summer the hits of the 70’s are back, and I don’t mean on the radio. In 2011, designers such as Diane Von Furstenberg, Elie Saab, Halston, Emilio Pucci and Yves Saint Laurent all show their own take on the decade. style.com features these designers in their round up of 70’s inspired looks and finds the muse for this trend in YSL’s innovative and legendary 1970’s collections. The tricky thing about revisiting fashion trends from decades past is assembling an outfit that doesn’t look costume-y. Vogue.com has a shopping guide that I feel can serve as (expensive) inspiration for future shopping wish lists. I adore shopbop.com because they not only sell all the most drool-worthy duds, but they create their own lookbooks for the season’s hottest trends. I think with this trend the most accessible pieces would include flattering high-waisted flared jeans in a dark wash, a pair of tall, yet slouchy, stacked-heel boots, an ethnic-print or white tunic top and some oversized round or aviator sunglasses. I wouldn’t suggest wearing all these things at once, but that’s not really my call. DL1961 Joy High Rise Flare JeansJoie Nancy Happy Print Blouse Chloe Sunglasses Oversized Tamaris Aviator Sunglasses with Leather Trim For those of you who want to revel in all the glory that is 70’s fashion, may I suggest a tie-neck blouse in a geometric print or bold color, a pair of obscenely high platform heels, or a slinky, almost knee-length dress that makes you feel like the diva you are. Another note: you will most likely need a waist-cinching belt to accent your curves and effectively accessorize. Report Signature Carle Ankle Strap Platform Sandals Beyond Vintage V Neck '70s Halter Dress B-Low The Belt Skinny Tassel Belt This trend has me beyond stoked for summer and this song makes me want to frolic in a grassy field wearing an outfit inspired by the 70's. Thanks for reading and enjoy the pics of my favorite 1970’s fashion icons! Farrah Fawcett Faye Dunaway Stevie Nicks Cher

Click here to be re-directed to your post I have adored Janis Joplin since before I can remember. I can recall seeing her on the cover of a record my parents had, while listening to her sing. I knew she was special, fleeting, just from the sound of her voice...though I hadn't yet learned about the tragedy of her death. So when a small group of fellow bloggers wanted to to a group themed post about "Style Icons" I knew exactly who I wanted to honor. In remembrance of Janis, I tried to stay true to her style. NO make-up, messy hair, just a sense of irreverence and eclectic styling. That was the easy part. Things got a bit dicey for me when it came time to shoot...my darling hubby is usually my photog. (though he does it grudgingly). This time, however, he just wasn't into it. Okay, truthfully, I've been in a summer haze of procrastination so I didn't really push too hard either. Perhaps you've noticed I haven’t been posting much here, that is why. I digress. So, it's the day I want to shoot and there isn't a soul to be found...except for my kids (7&8 years old). They are always dying to play with Mommy's phone, and eagerly accepted the job. For a while at least... The shots turned out rough and rather unfocused, but you know what? I think it only serves better tribute to Janis. After all, she was a free spirit, right? Real talk: I have rolled my eyes many a time of bloggers who use their kids as photographers. In the future I will refrain for two reasons 1) obviously I don't want to be a hypocrite and 2) this is way, way harder with a kid. Note: I am now planning to buy a tripod soon, very soon. As you might expect, the kids got bored pretty quickly. I was left on my own, less than ideal. However it got me thinking: what would Janis do in the age of the selfie? Truthfully, I doubt it would be her sort of thing, but for the sake of this project we are going to roll with it. I had a wonderful time listening to her sing while I tried to imagine what a 21st century Janis might be like. Janis did love her some accessories "Don't compromise yourself, you're all you've got" ~ Janis Joplin About this project: #untamedstyle I have a fabulous circle of friends. Some of these friends just so happen to be bloggers. We are an eclectic tribe of women (mostly) in our 30s and plus size, who know that style has nothing to do with our age or the number on a scale. Style comes from within, it's like an aura or a life force and we recognize that. We recently started talking about collaborating on some themed style posts and today's is the first. You will certainly be seeing more in the future! See that awesome verbage up there? That was written by Veronica of Cid Style File; this whole thing was her brilliant idea. My other soul sisters collaborating on this one are Aarti of Curves Become Her, Zadry of Curves a la Mode, and Margot Meanie. Go check out their Style Icon posts, too! Keep your eyes peeled for more #untamedstyle posts in the future!

Jimi Hendrix was arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music. Many musicians nowadays see Jimi Hendrix as a legend. Especially the guitarists, because Jimi Hendrix played mostly on his electric guitar.

Janis Joplin A woman that took a male dominated industry and created it in her own image, Janis’ music represented what it is to be a woman. In her we can identify with the mad passion to love but the fear of hurt and rejection that comes with it. When she sings “each time I tell myself that I think I’ve had enough, I’m gonna show you baby that a woman can be tough”, we truly believe her.

When you only gotta do one thing well, you only gotta do one thing well to make it in this world, babe. Janis Joplin, one of my favorites, and I like all her songs (I have a boxed set). I saw her at a 1969 concert in college and she was in fantastic form. Whether joy, anger, or humor was the theme of the song, the minute she started you could feel the emotion. She put it on the line. This was not like most other female vocalists, and that attracted us. What you didn't see, but could feel, was the tremendous work ethic she had, I'll play her and sing along just for the energy. She is missed.

Jimi Hendrix’s Woodstock. By the time he took the stage, just about everyone had left the mud-soaked music fest. A number of factors conspired against Hendrix: poor logistical planning, crappy weather, oversized crowds—not to mention an unpolished pickup band playing backup. Hendrix’s set—the final one of the three-day weekend festival—was supposed to start at 3 a.m., but didn’t get rolling until 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, 1969. By then, most of the Woodstock Nation had to get home.
