Compost tumblers are awesome. They create a compact, easy-to-turn space for your discarded food scraps and yard waste that will produce rich compost. A simple one is a 50-gallon drum, that you cut a door into the side then put hinges on the door. Drill some ventilation holes into and build a wood frame so you can turn the barrel by hand, the drum turns your compost.
