Straw bale gardening. Who knew??? I think I'm going to add this in my garden this year, just to experiment. :)
To make a straw bale garden more attractive, tuck in a few marigolds around the base and sow nasturtiums on the corners of the bales. Plant several varieties of colorful lettuce and perhaps a squash or pumpkin vine spilling a few fruits over the side.

Strawberries grown in vertical tiers. I can't find explanation for how they did it. I wonder if those are straw bales.
Growing strawberries vertically. This can be done without the framework structure, of course. If you can figure out how this was done, let me know. Still, straw is a great mulch and keeps the strawberries clean and off the soil.
Grow Strawberries Vertically Using Old Straw Bales. (The link is dead, but you get the general idea from the photo. Straw bales will degrade and fall apart over time, thus the structural support around the bales, I suspect. I would leave more access at the top for watering.

There is no better way to extend your garden and gardening season than with containers. This is where your imagination can go wild. You can use virtually any pot or container and add a plethora of plants to your hearts desire. This is certainly where a gardeners creativity can soar. I went online to see what outstanding arrangements I could find and share with my friends, below you will see what I found, I love the fact you have a list of what plants to add to your container so it will make it super easy for you in creating your container garden. Thank you BHG for sharing. Tulips, Pansies Foxgloves, & Grasses When planning your flowerbeds, buy extra plants for accents. These containers were planted with flowers left over from the borders. Not only do the containers look great, but also they tie back into the colors of the adjacent walk. Bring on Spring! Combine daffodils with citrus hues and fragrant seasonal blooms for colorful containers that keep on giving. This trio combines floriferous 'Superbells Dreamsicle' calibrachoa, fragrant 'Snow Princess' sweet alyssum, and cool-weather 'Sunsatia Lemon' nemesia. Pansies, Violas, Panolas, Grass & Ivy Orange pansies, violas, and Panolas provide a warm autumnal welcome in this grouping. Try pairing colorful and distinctive flowers like these with a textural plant, like a grass. Coleus Container Unlike cut blooms, a living flower arrangement planted in a container gives you color and beauty for months. Combine plants that thrive in the same growing conditions and offer colors and textures that complement each other. Hostas, Violas & Blue Phlox Consider using a cast-concrete pool for a miniature garden. Because these pools are made to accommodate plumbing, there are already holes in the bottom that allow for drainage. Trailing Petunias Add color to your outdoor party with potted plants. There’s no need for a patterned tablecloth here. Potted petunias add all the color you need under the glass-top dining table. Lettuce & Ornamentals Use unique containers like vintage wooden boxes and buckets as container gardens. Be sure to drill drainage holes before planting. This variety of planters is filled with a mix of edibles, like lettuce, and decoratives, like marigolds and geraniums. Cascading Geraniums Mini Cascade ivy geraniums take the South’s summer heat and keep on blooming. Bargain Blooms Take advantage of seasonal sales at your local nursery, and stock up on popular plants. Keep them in their nursery pots, and display them in galvanized buckets on the porch until you are ready to plant them in your garden. Recreate this look with gerbera daisies, salvias, shasta daisies, daylilies, and sweet potato vines. Fire Up Fall with Color Go-to grasses and can't-fail lantanas mark the advent of a bright new season.re filled with pink verbenas and white bacopas.

How to plant a straw bale garden!
Tips on Straw Bale Gardening
MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA
Gardeners are always looking for ways to make their gardens more productive. The latest trend is growing vegetables in straw bales, a method that resembles container gardening, except that the bales are both the container and the planting medium. Here’s how it works: You purchase straw bales – not hay bales, and the best straw bales are made from wheat. These typically cost about $5 each. Then, you “condition” the bales by flooding them with water and fertilizer for 10 days. During the conditioning, the inside of the bales starts to decompose and within a couple of weeks you have a very fertile medium, similar to compost, inside the bales. You can plant seedlings directly into the bales or add potting soil or compost to the top of the bale and use seeds. When the season is over, you harvest your crops, take the twine off the bales and knock them over. Viola! More compost! Straw bales ready for planting. The straw-bales method has several advantages. The conditioning process heats up the interior of the bales, so when you plant tomatoes or other heat-loving vegetables into them, their roots are kept warmer. Last year, I grew tomatoes in the ground in my garden and in two straw bales. The straw-bale tomatoes were about two weeks ahead of the ones in the ground all season and ended up producing more fruit. They had no disease problems and because the bales were off the ground, they weren’t bothered by the many critters that inhabit my garden. Straw-bale gardening works especially well for gardeners with poor soil because you are creating your own growing medium in the bale. If there is a disadvantage to straw-bale gardening, it’s that you have to water them frequently – every day during the two weeks of conditioning, then nearly every day afterward unless it’s pouring rain. Karsten recommends setting up soaker hoses, though I prefer to water manually. One other thing about straw-bale gardening: It attracts attention. I put my bales in an out-of-the-way spot at the back of the yard. But even though they are somewhat out-of-sight, several of my neighbors followed their progress intently – and like me, they were surprised at how well the bales grew. You will need at least 4 for good pollination. 2) Your mini trench needs to be about 3 or 4 inches deep. 3) Sprinkle fertilizer down your row. I use 10-10-10. 4) Walk down your rows dropping 3 seed every foot step or so. Then lightly cover with your dirt. 5) If you don’t have bees for pollinating, just shake the stalks when they start 7) Plant just one kind if you don’t want it to cross pollinate.
