"The art of losing isn't hard to master..." One Art by Elizabeth Bishop Not really a quote, but a fave poem :)
One of my very favorite poems!! I should frame this in my house somewhere- though it's a bit tragic.
Find poetry by Elizabeth Bishop in the Gregg-Graniteville Library: http://libcat.csd.sc.edu/search~S3?/abishop%2C+elizabeth/abishop+elizabeth/1%2C2%2C8%2CB/exact&FF=abishop+elizabeth+1911+1979&1%2C7%2C/indexsort=-
"One Art" by Elizabeth Bishop read in the movie "In Her Shoes" -- this poem always makes me cry...
One Art by Elizabeth Bishop Villanelle lyric form: formal form combined with informal..naturalness Form: 19 lines, divided into 6 stanzas. 5 tear eats, 1 quatrain, turning on 2 rhymes built around 2 refrains. As it turns and returns, it becomes a model of change and stability, repetition and variation framed by circularity..slowing the momentum of change. Moves from miniature to gigantic. Defenses merging as truth..disaster!
My favorite poem. One Art by Elizabeth Bishop

you can travel so much in books THIS IS THE REASON DICTATORS AND RELIGIOUS TYRANTS ALWAYS STAMP OUT THE PRACTICE OF INDEPENDENT READING. BOOKS OFFER ESCAPE, AND TYRANTS HATE THAT.

Excerpt from East Coker. I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope / For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love, / For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith / But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting. / Wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought: / So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing. “This is what I believe: That I am I. That my soul is a dark forest. That my known self will never be more than a little clearing in the forest. That gods, strange gods, come forth from the forest into the clearing of my known self, and then go back. That I must have the courage to let them come and go. That I will never let mankind put anything over me, but that I will try always to recognize and submit to the gods in me and the gods in other men and women. There is my creed.” —D. H. Lawrence
