Who wouldn't love to have a portrait like this of their child? Look at that expression and those eyes.

Instead of post-mortem photos, some folks called for the photographer when they had a critically-ill child to take a picture while the child was still living so they would have a memento if their baby didn't survive. The baby in this one appears to be one of these. I would think this baby was very sick, perhaps with a high fever, at the time this picture was made.
