Cutting Jack Daniels Bottles

Putting Empty Jack Daniel's Bottles to Good Use I have a preconceived notion that if a project isn't on Pinterest, it's never been done before - and seriously, what arts and crafts project HASN'T been done? As I was disheartened to find out, apparently no one has ever made a Jack Daniels bottle into a centerpiece (unless you consider a lamp or a soap dispenser a centerpiece, then hey, power to ya!). That, or the select individuals who figured out how to evenly cut square glass bottles decided to keep their secret to themselves. Hmph. So, no thanks to Pinterest, I took to the Internet to figure out how to sever a JD bottle. However, I only managed to come across tutorials that involved beer bottles, wine bottles, and other brands of liquor (ie the kind that come in round bottles, ugh). Apparently YouTube sucks, too (kidding). Anyway, after watching several videos involving hairspray, yarn, ice, blow torches, motor oil, matches, cutting wheels and nail polish remover to sever round bottles, I figured I'd try the easiest method on my square bottles first. And lo and behold, it worked: This was actually a super-exciting, super-easy project (but not as deceptively easy as it looks in my video, sorry guys! I'm a gal for dramatics.) Actual steps below! Things you'll need: a glass cutter, masking tape (optional), a deep pot of boiling water, safety glasses, rubber gloves, cold water, and a Jack Daniels Bottle. 1. Make a friend who drinks Jack Daniels like it's going out of style. 2. Purchase a scoring knife or cutting wheel. (Here's a glass cutter from Home Depot for $8) if you have a steady hand. If you can't draw a straight line to save your life (like me - with a ruler, no less) I'd recommend a bottle cutting kit to ensure your line stays parallel to the bottom of the bottle. I bought this one off of Amazon for $26. (It has a two-star rating likely because the directions inside have a lot of msispleled wodrs, and the cut-and-whack method they suggest often leads to a jagged edge. And glass shards. Everywhere.) I picked this one because the adjustable place holder on the base of the kit can be removed. This is important because I'd only be able to rotate round bottles along the scoring wheel with the place holding arm in place. 3. Decide where you want your empty JD bottle to break. Either mark off a straight line all the way around by placing masking tape underneath your cut line, or move the wheel on your glass cutting kit to the desired height*. *From my experience, almost every time I wanted my bottle to break in the space above the label but below where the neck started to curve inward, no matter how hard I pressed my bottle against the cutting wheel, the bottle always seemed to break unevenly. Part of it would break on my score (cut) line, but the rest of the crack would extend upward and break around the base of the neck of the bottle. After a few tries, I moved my score line up to where the base of the bottle's neck meets its widest point. For your first try, if you're wanting to preserve the label area of your JD bottle, I'd recommend scoring the very top of your bottle's widest point before it curves inward. 4. Boil a pot of water. Make sure your pot is deep enough that the waterline will meet the score line of your bottle after dipping it in. (But don't actually dip your bottle in just yet!) Also, if you plan on scoring your bottle where the label is, you might want to take the label off. I haven't tried slicing my bottles in half, but I'd imagine the label would prevent the cutting tool from making an impression on the bottle. After all, the scored line is really shallow! 5. Cut your bottle. After you've taped your line or adjusted the height of your cutting wheel on your bottle cutter kit, put on your goggles and gloves (FYI: I totally didn't do this part, but hey, you never know!) press the cutter into the bottle and make one full circle (err, square) around the bottle. Only do this once. If you rescore over your original line, you'll have a greater chance of ending up with a jagged edge at the end of the process. Also, when you're cutting around the bottle, be sure to apply extra pressure to the corners. Your score line will probably look as thin and deep as a strand of hair. 6. Dip your bottle into the boiling water up to the score line. There's not really a science to this. After a few seconds (3-5 for smaller bottles, 5-10 for the mammoth bottles), once you think your score line has been heated, take your bottle out and quickly place the scoreline under cold running water. 7. Hold the score line of your bottle under cold running water, and twist it your bottle so that the water hits the whole line. Try to only get the score line area with cold water - you could end up stressing more than just your score line and consequently crack other areas of your bottle. At this point, you may have already heard a cracking sound. Hurrah! 8. Repeat Steps 6-7. After you hear the first satisfactory CRACK! you may be tempted to pull the top of the bottle off. However, in my experience, after only 2 trips to the pot and trips to the sink, the top of the bottle would pop off on its own so there's no need. Ta-da! You did it, you little devil you! 9. Give yourself a well earned self-five.
