The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh... definitely one of my very favorite books of all time!
My first pick for book club. a phenomenal book about a girl who grew up in the foster care system…one of the homes she lived in she learned of the language of flowers from the Victorian age. When she aged out of the foster care system, she was homeless, and landed a job in a floral shop and used her skills which helps her work through her past.

The Language of Flowers. Book recommendation. Add to reading list.
A book club read that was truly worth reading!
Book Review The Language of Flowers Vanessa Diffenbaugh How does one begin to trust after a lifetime of betrayals? Is it possible for one to be trusted after a lifetime of one’s own lies and deceit? These are the questions that Victoria Jones struggles to answer in The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. Orphaned at birth and processed through the foster care system her entire life, Victoria has finally reached the age of majority and has aged out of the foster care system. Completely on her own for the first time, she must learn to land on her feet and make it on her own, or face certain homelessness and starvation. At a time when most young women are just discovering who they are or who they want to be, Victoria must make these discoveries while simultaneously shouldering the burden of her own success or failure in a world that has thus far shown more cruelty than kindness. With no money, no education and no support system in place to help her, Victoria turns to the only good thing she’s ever known: The nearly forgotten language of flowers -- a language created by the Victorians as a means to express their emotions through flowers. Is it true that “A rose is a rose is a rose” as Gertrude Stein once argued? Are things really exactly as they seem to be, or might there be more to be discovered below the surface? As Victoria struggles to answer these questions for herself, she is forced to admit to her own culpability in the trail of youthful destruction she has left behind. The Language of Flowers is a beautiful story that intertwines Victoria’s past with her present, and teaches us all the important lesson that we sometimes must make peace with our past in order to look forward to a bright future. This title is available in standard and e-book format at the library. Find The Language of Flowers on Goodreads Genres/Themes: Romance, Women's Fiction My Rating: ★★☆☆☆ Not quite sure why this book is rated as high as it is. Even the people in my book group mostly seemed to love it. I found it depressing from beginning to end. Victoria was so stupid about many of her choices. I couldn't connect with any of the characters at all. I pretty much wanted to slap everyone all the way through, especially Elizabeth. From Book Club Discussion: 1.Did you enjoy the book overall? What was your favorite and/or least favorite thing about it? No, I didn’t like the book at all. I think part of it was because I couldn’t really relate to the characters. Although I have some family issues here and there (who doesn’t), my family is pretty awesome and is really close. I can’t imagine not having a family and not caring about anything. What’s sad is that that’s what a lot of kids in foster care feel. If this book is any indication of what the system can really be like, then no wonder she's so messed up. 5. The novel touches on many different themes (love, family, forgiveness, second chances). Which do you think is the most important? And what did you think was ultimately the lesson? For me, family is ultimately the most important. No matter how much they drive you nuts, or how much you “hate” them, you should always be there when they need you the most. When you care about your family to that extent, then love, forgiveness, and second chances are a given. I think the lesson was that it’s important to care. When you care, you can give and get all four of the above listed.

Third book on the post Harry Potter book list. I've already read this one and it's on my list of all time favorites.
One of my all time favorite books ever. I've read it three times and will most assuredly read it again and again. It's exquisite, sublime, utter perfection. If you haven't read this book, you really should.
The Secret History, Donna Tartt’s bestselling first novel, deserves the accolade "a modern classic." Tartt worked with UM writers in residence Willie Morris and Barry Hannah during her freshman year at UM.
The Secret History by Donna Tartt. A modern classic. One of the best you'll read this decade. http://www.amazon.com/Secret-History-Donna-Tartt/dp/1400031702/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie;=UTF8&qid;=1327177509&sr;=1-1
THE SECRET HISTORY – DONNA TARTT (1992) A contemporary of Brett Easton Ellis, Donna Tartt’s The Secret History is a murder mystery presented in reverse, a modern Greek tragedy involving a group of students studying classics at an upscale Vermont college who stage a wild ‘bacchanal’ which ends in the death of a local farmer. The murder soon exposes the fault lines in the tight-knit group’s relationship.

Suite Francaise - Irene Nemirovsky. "Set in the 1940's, Suite Française is a singularly piercing evocation--at once subtle and severe, deeply compassionate and fiercely ironic--of life and death in occupied France, and a brilliant, profoundly moving work of art." Staff Pick: Katherine
Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky, this month's Standish Green Book Club selection. Liking it so far.
Suite Francaise - Irene Nemirovsky. Excellent. Even more amazing after one reads about the story and fate of the author.
Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky. This book has been a continuation of my run on books that take place in Paris that I have been on for the last year. This book is about Paris during WWII and the Nazi occupation. When Irène Némirovsky began working on Suite Française, she was already a highly successful writer living in Paris. But she was also a Jew, and in 1942 she was arrested and deported to Auschwitz, where she died. For sixty-four years, this novel remained hidden and unknown.
