Artificial jellyfish powered by rat heart muscle cells. Is this cool, creepy, or both of the above?
Dubbed "Medusoid", this artificial jellyfish was fashioned from silicone rubber and powered by lab-grown rat heart tissue. Image courtesy: Harvard University and Caltech
Dubbed a "Medusoid," the synthetic creature swims in water in a similar fashion to a real jellyfish. It was created from rat heart muscle cells and silicon polymer - reverse engineering done to further understanding of how our hearts work.
Artificial jellyfish swims like real jellyfish. Eight arm structures made with elastic silicone coated with rat heart cells stimulated to contract or "swim" when placed in tank with electric field. Could lead to the engineering of body parts.
Made from inanimate silicone and living cardiac muscle cells, an artificial "jellyfish" was engineered to pump its way through water, much as a human heart pumps blood through the body.
Using rat heart cells and silicone polymer, researchers have bioengineered a "jellyfish" that knows how to swim. The odd jellyfish mimic, dubbed a "Medusoid" by its creators, is more than a curiosity. It's a natural biological pump, just like the human heart. That makes it a good model to use to study cardiac physiology, said study researcher Kevin Kit Parker, a bioengineer at Harvard University.
Artificial jellyfish engineered from rat heart cells: "The motivation behind this new work was borne out of team member Kevin Parker's frustration with the state of the cardiac field. An applied physicist and bioengineer at Harvard University in the US, he worried that the drug-development pipeline for cardiac disease was "starting to look a little bit lean"."
Scientists created the "pseudo-organism" from rat heart muscle cells and a piece of silicone membrane with eight appendages. When the test-tube jellyfish was set free in a container of salty water, and electrically shocked to start its lab-grown heart tissue contracting, it began to propel itself along. - hmmm, is this a good idea?
Aside from Frankenstein, previous attempts to make synthetic life have focused on genes. Geneticist Craig Venter and his colleagues, for example, announced in 2010 that they had created a one-celled creature by inserting an artificial genome in an existing cell that reproduced. Now a separate team of scientists from Harvard University and the California Institute of Technology have built an eight-armed jellyfish by inserting muscle cells from a rat into a sheet of silicone. The resulting "medusoid," as they called it, could offer insights into tissue engineering -- such as re-building a heart. And show that when building tissues, there might be several ways or materials to use other than those found in nature. To build the medusoid, the scientists mapped out the protein networks in a real jellyfish's muscle cells. They then looked at how electrical current triggers the muscle contraction. Another piece of the puzzle was uncovering the mechanics at how jellyfish move. The animals squeezes a muscle to propel itself through the water, but it was important to study the biomechanics of the stroke in order to duplicate it. The scientists also found that a sheet of cultured heart muscle tissue from a rat would contract when electrically stimulated in a liquid environment. By incorporating the muscle cells with a silicone polymer membrane, they were able to create a jellyfish-shaped body with eight appendages. The artificial creature was put into a container of salt water and hit with an electrical current. It started swimming just like a real animal. The next step is making a jellyfish that engages in ordinary behaviors, such as seeking food and responding to its environment. Study co-author Kevin Kit Parker, professor of bioengineering and applied physics at Harvard, said he got interested in the project in 2007, when he started thinking about muscular pumps such as hearts. Seeing jellyfish at the New England Aquarium inspired him: he saw that there were similarities between jellyfish and human hearts.

Russian biologist Alexander Semenov graduated in 2007 from Moscow State University’s zoology department where he studied invertebrate animals. Specifically: squid brains. Now he works as the chief of his diving team at the White Sea Biological Station, camera always in-hand, where he’s captured some of these extraordinary photographs of jellyfish and other wildlife.

Alexander Semenov's Bio: In 2007, I graduated from Lomonosov’s Moscow State University in the department of Zoology. I specialized in the study of invertebrate animals, with an emphasis on squid brains. Soon after, I began working at the White Sea Biological Station (WSBS) as a senior laborer. WSBS has a dive station, which is great for all sorts of underwater scientific needs, and after 4 years working there, I became chief of our diving team. I now organize all WSBS underwater projects and dive by myself with a great pleasure and always with a camera. When I first began to experiment with sea life photography I tried shooting small invertebrates for fun with my own old dslr camera and without any professional lights or lenses. I collected the invertebrates under water and then I’ve shot them in the lab. After two or three months of failure after failure I ended up with a few good pictures, which I’ve showed to the crew. It has inspired us to buy a semi-professional camera complete with underwater housing and strobes. Thus I’ve spent the following field season trying to shoot the same creatures, but this time in their environment. It was much more difficult, and I spent another two months without any significant results. But when you’re working at something every day, you inevitably get a lot of experience. Eventually I began to get interesting photos — one or two from each dive. Now after four years of practice I get a few good shots almost every time I dive but I still have a lot of things that need to be mastered in underwater photography.[via clione.ru] As head of the scientific diver’s team at the White Sea Biological Station in northwestern Russia, marine biologist Alexander Semenov has been studying—and photographing—the life cycle of Cyanea capillata, aka the lion’s mane jellyfish. The creatures only live for about six months, usually from May to September, but grow to a diameter of two to three meters with tentacles as long as 36 meters. “I’m trying to study marine life through the lenses, and from year-to-year I get more and more knowledge about the underwater world of cold waters of the north,” Semenov says.[via PDN] Alexander Semenov at work Portrait of Alexander Semenov
