Leg amputated at hip.
Civil War amputee posing next to his prosthetic leg, circa 1865. The power of this man owning it with such righteous dignity. Not sure I would have his strength.
Amputations in the United States Civil War . While the US Civil War was the first time that the survival rate of people who needed amputation was over 50% (in large part due to the contributions of Joseph Lister and chloroform), artificial limbs have been known to have been around since at least the Late Egyptian Dynasties.
Civil War Amputee, circa 1865. I wish I knew how reliable this source was and if this is actually post civil war!

Bonnie Parker & Clyde Barrow were well-known outlaws/robbers/criminals who traveled the US with their gang known as the "Barrow Gang." Their exploits captured the attention of the public during the "public enemy era" between 1931-34. The gang is believed to have killed at least 9 police officers and committed several civilian murders. The couple themselves were eventually ambushed and killed in Louisiana by law officers on 5/23/34.
The Real "Bonnie & Clyde". Bonnie Parker (1910-1934) and Clyde Barrow (1909-1934) were American outlaws and robbers from the Dallas area who traveled the central United States with their gang during the Great Depression. Though known today for his dozen-or-so bank robberies, Barrow preferred to rob small stores or rural gas stations. The gang is believed to have killed at least nine police officers and several civilians. The couple were killed in Bienville Parish, Louisiana, by law officers.
