Actress Louise Brooks (1927) - Flappers had their origins in the liberal period of the Roaring Twenties, the social, political turbulence and increased transatlantic cultural exchange that followed the end of World War I, as well as the export of American jazz culture to Europe.

Louise Brooks_ Actress, dancer, and model of the 1920s known for infamous flapper fashion. Book 'The Chaperone' by Laura Moriarty is a great story about her life... One of my faves
Louise Brooks c. 1926. Flappers were a "new breed" of young Western women in the 1920s who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to jazz, and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. Flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup, drinking, treating sex in a casual manner, smoking, driving automobiles, and otherwise flouting social and sexual norms.
dorothy knapp fashion 1920s | Louise Brooks in fur trimmed coat, cloche hat and drop waist dress
ARGUMENTS AGAINST THE FLAPPER CULTURE: Flappers are lazy pleasure-seekers who are only interested in drinking, partying, and flirting. They often neglect their education and refuse to make important commitments such as marriage and child-rearing. Flappers also spend far too much money on clothes to achieve a trendy look, and, despite claiming to be independent, are in fact conformists who adhere to common fashion styles and behavior modes dictated by others.
The 'flappers' was the symbol of 1920s. Flapper means the young women who rejected conventional dress and behaviour. Flappers always rebelled against their parents' morals. Before 1920, it was considered shameful to reveal bare skin. Women's clothing were conservative. Flappers changed the it totally. They stared to expose their ankles, calves, knees, and even backs. And it also made the fashion cheeper, which means more women could afford the costs. (Photography 1927)

Iconic Flapper - Louise Brooks was a dancer, model, showgirl, and actress - but her hair received much of the attention she earned in the 1920s. She is credited with popularizing the bob. Although American, she became best known acting in German expressionist films.
Louise Brooks: This silent film star wasn't the first to cut her hair into a sleek Dutch bob, but she made it the defining look of the era. Her daring, individual style was mirrored in her career choices, with Brooks shunning the 'talkies' to remain one of the most enigmatic actresses of the 20th century.

1920 S, Louise Brooks, Bobs, Hairstyle, Hair Style, 1920S
Many women, especially flappers wore bobbed haircuts throughout the 1920's. This hairstyle is widely recognized with the time period.
Bobbed Hair: a popular hair style for younger women, it was a blunt hair cut level with the bottom of one's ears all the way around. Worn with bangs or hair brushed off the forehead, straight or curly.
To wear your hair short was a major statement by a woman, one of independence. Bobbed hair was first made popular by dancer Irene Castle, as far back as 1916, is the definitive hairstyle look for the 1920s. As the 1920s advanced, it became synonymous with the flapper look.
§ Bobbed Hair: in 1920s, the very short and close-cropped bob haircut was popular for women at the time
1920's bob- 1922 The Times was suggesting that bobbed hair was passé, by the mid-1920s the style (in various versions, often worn with a side-parting, curled or waved, and with the hair at the nape of the neck "shingled" short), was the dominant female hairstyle in the Western world. The style was spreading even beyond the West, as women who rejected traditional roles adopted the bob cut as a sign of modernity.
Louise Brooks and her 1920's bob. The history behind fashion in the 20's is really interesting.
