Art Smith. 'Paraspiral' Sterling silver, c.1950's. One of the leading modernist jewelers of the mid-twentieth century, Smith trained at Cooper Union. Inspired by surrealism, biomorphicism, and primitivism, Art Smith’s jewelry is dynamic in its size and form. Although sometimes massive in scale, his jewelry remains lightweight and wearable. Abstract sterling silver necklace by American modernist jeweler, Art Smith (1917-1982), with a faceted semi precious stone. The sterling has the original patinated surface; the stone, which is probably a citrine, has miniscule imperfections and inclusions. The necklace was bought directly from Smith and thence to Leah Gordon Antiques. It is signed on the reverse.
