When the air is cold and the Sun is rising or setting, falling ice crystals can reflect sunlight and create an unusual column of light. Ice sometimes forms flat, hexagonal crystals as it falls from high-level clouds. Air resistance causes these crystals to lie nearly flat much of the time as they flutter to the ground. Sunlight reflects off crystals that are properly aligned, creating the sun-pillar effect- here from the sun setting over Östersund, Sweden

Some amazing cloud formations - Imgur Mammatus Clouds
Normal cloud bottoms are flat. This is because moist warm air that rises and cools will condense into water droplets at a specific temperature, which usually corresponds to a very specific height. As water droplets grow, an opaque cloud forms. Under some conditions, however, cloud pockets can develop that contain large droplets of water or ice that fall into clear air as they evaporate. Such pockets may occur in turbulent air near a thunderstorm. Resulting mammatus clouds can appear especially dramatic if sunlit from the side. These mammatus clouds were photographed over Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada in 2011. Image Credit: Craig Lindsay Explanation from: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap121023.html

Animal photography is probably one of the most dangerous types of photography. The outcome totally depends on the skills of photographer and the time when the shot is taken. A photographer who uses good exposure, color and blur settings along with appropriate shutter speed and focusing techniques can produce stunning photographs.

Iceland Volcano Lightning | Epic Photos of the 2010 Volcanic Eruptions in Iceland
Eyjafjallajökull Volcano, Iceland Photograph by Sigurdur Hrafn Stefnisson This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine Features Lightning veins the Eyjafjallajökull volcano's ash plume, which roiled air travel this spring. Such "dirty thunderstorms" may occur when rock and ice particles loosed by exploding magma collide in the atmosphere
"If you are a keen nature photographer, there are few countries which can offer as much variety as Iceland. Photographer Sigurður Stefnisson has his pick of natural phenomena to choose from, in the land of fire and ice where volcanoes and the Northern Lights are almost a daily part of life. The opportunities have allowed the award-winning photographer to capture thousands of captivating images, one of which was voted one of National Geographic's 100 best nature photographs."
Eyjafjallajokull Volcano, Iceland - On a Sunday In Iceland, Volcano Eyjafjallajökull burst through her ice caps and provided a light show for villagers down below of burning red magma and crackling white lightning as clouds of black ash covered the night sky. Photographer Sigurdur Hrafn Stefnisso took the time to snap some photos before getting to safety.

Tahiti is known as a tropical paradise for good reason, but the island is actually made of two volcanoes connected by a narrow and short isthmus. The larger one, Tahiti-Nui, is older, with lava rocks dated to 1.7 million years ago. Tahiti-Iti, the smaller one, has lava less than a million years old.

Eclipsed Moon Over Wyoming (June 6 2012) Credit & Copyright: Mack H. Frost A setting full moon rarely looks like this. Monday morning just before a fully lit Strawberry Moon dropped behind the Absaroka Mountain Range near Cody, Wyoming, USA, the shadow of the Earth got in the way. A similarly setting partial lunar eclipse was visible throughout most of North and South America, while simultaneously the same partially darkened moon was visible throughout eastern Asia. #astronomy

The photo above shows a beautiful early fall sunset and calcite rocks in a volcanic lagoon. It was taken on the Somuncura Plateau in the Rio Negro province of Argentina. The rim of an extinct volcano can be detected around the lagoon. It's thought that these calcite rocks were formed by microorganisms that once thrived in the extreme environments found on the basaltic Somuncura Plateau. Photographer: Luis Argerich
