If you have phone service through the cable company, even a corded phone will only get service as long as your modem's back-up battery continues to supply power. In an extended outage, your cell phone may still be the best bet.
And if you only have a cell phone put it on airplane mode and only turn it on when necessary to save battery.
or get a little solar cell generator... not that expensive and would be MEGA helpful in case of a long-term black-out... We bought one a LONG time ago and it just sits in the basement... just in case...
