Colorful Coastal Design

You probably expect to see white and ocean blues as the dominant colors in a house by the water. Here's a look at how to capture a coastal style in more unexpected color palettes – there's really a rainbow of possibilities.

There's no fear of color here. The bright accents in this cottage kitchen include pops of orange, turquoise, lime green, yellow and red. The pantry cabinet opens up to painted orange shelves and a colorful mix of dishes, setting a playful tone in the kitchen. And let's not forget the checkerboard floor of blue-and-white tiles. The whimsical color palette suits the laid-back beach cottage on Tybee Island in Georgia.

To keep the fabric stretched taut, secure it to the inside cover using double-sided tape.

Seasonal trees aren't restricted to holiday use. Give your bedroom a graphic winter vibe with a metal candle tree that will light up the space on long, cold nights. It's best to keep candle trees at least one foot away from walls, window treatments and upholstery.

In this masculine master suite, the rich wood sleigh bed creates a strong focal point that is balanced by matching lamps and window treatments. The look is architectural, and elegant. We paired traditional elements with bold fabrics and modern upholstery to create a space that was classic and sophisticated, says designer Robert Brown.

It’s important for any bedroom to reflect the personality of its owner, so don’t be afraid to break the rules and inject a little humor. “I had so much fun decorating this space,” says designer Kristin Peake. “It’s an eclectic room, and so was our thought process. We even found a clear, hollow lamp and filled it with gumballs!”
