Overtime, under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), is one and one-half times the regular rate of pay for hours worked beyond the 40-hour workweek.

The FLSA established a national minimum wage, required overtime pay under certain circumstances, and prohibited child labor. The FLSA applies to employees who are engaged in interstate commerce or in the production of goods for commerce or who are employed by a business that participates in such activities, though many exemptions apply. One of the biggest exemptions is for white-collar workers, professional, administrative, and executive employees.
