  • The Militant Negro™

Statement By The President On Marriage Equality In Illinois. President Barack Obama praised Illinois state lawmakers on Tuesday after passing legislation legalizing gay marriage and sending it to Gov. Pat Quinn to sign. After the state House and Senate votes, Obama said in a statement, “Tonight, I applaud the men and women of the Illinois General Assembly, a body in which I was proud to serve, for voting to legalize marriage equality in my home state."

The New Yorker magazine cover: " a nod to President Obama's historic support of gay marriage. Artist Bob Staake said, "I am honored to be doing this cover. It’s a celebratory moment for our country, and that’s what I tried to capture.... I wanted to celebrate the bravery of the President’s statement—a statement long overdue—but all the more appreciated in this political year. We are on the right side of history."

A New Yorker cover that never ran. It was supposed to have been printed to mark FDR's first inauguration (that's him in the car, grinning, next to a sullen President-Defunct Hoover). But on Feb. 15, a man named Giuseppe Zangara shot at Roosevelt. He missed, but hit Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago, who eventually died, and the New Yorker's editors deemed the cover inappropriate.
