Chapter 19 pt. II: Tea Cake's health deteriorates and he becomes delusional. He accuses Janie of sneaking out to see Mrs. Tuner's brother. Janie finds a pistol with three bullets and sets it so she will have time to react if he tries to shoot. Tea Cake returns crazier than ever holding the pistol to Janie. She grabs the rifle to try and scare him off but Janie has no choice but to shoot him. Janie is put on trial the same day but is found innocent by an all-white, all-male jury.

Encourage classroom teachers to have their own classroom libraries for when students finish something early! If your county's policy allows, perhaps you can give weeded books to them. Another idea is to check out a cart of books to stay in classrooms for a period of time, especially if students are working on a project and finishing at different rates. Her are some fabulous ideas of popular books for middle school students.
