The Gonzalez Battle Flag was flown for the first time in response to the Mexican army's demand to return a 5 pounder that has previously be given to the Texians. When the Mexican army demanded the cannon back, the defenders defiantly flew this flag. Thus began the battle for Texas independence.

Come and Take It - Celebrations - Gonzales Chamber of Commerce www.gonzalestexas... Each year, on the first full weekend of October, the citizens of Gonzales gather to celebrate their Texas heritage in a three-day festival called “Come & Take It" - You know, of course, no one but Texans are going to know what we are talking about? “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” ~ Mark Twain Dateline October 2, 1835, The Battle of Gonzales was the first military engagement of the Texas Revolution. It took place near Gonzales, Texas, between rebellious Texian settlers and a detachment of Mexican army troops. A handmade flag with the words “Come and Take It” along with a crude drawing of a cannon were written in defiance of Santa Anna’s attempt to disarm the citizens.
