“It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” ~ Mark Twain Dateline October 2, 1835, The Battle of Gonzales was the first military engagement of the Texas Revolution. It took place near Gonzales, Texas, between rebellious Texian settlers and a detachment of Mexican army troops. A handmade flag with the words “Come and Take It” along with a crude drawing of a cannon were written in defiance of Santa Anna’s attempt to disarm the citizens.
