The Lilypad, by Vincent Callebaut, is a concept for a completely self-sufficient floating city intended to provide shelter for future climate change refugees. The Lilypad is intended to be a zero emission city afloat in the ocean. Through a number of technologies (solar, wind, tidal, biomass), it is envisioned that the project would be able to not only produce it’s own energy, but be able to process CO2 in the atmosphere and absorb it into its titanium dioxide skin.

Lilypad Ecopolis | Architect Vincent Callebaut designed Lilypads to be self-sufficient floating cities that can each accommodate up to 50,000 climate change refugees. Aquaculture farms and suspended gardens would be located below the water line, and the cities would run completely on renewable energy. Callebaut plans for his Lilypad concept to become a reality in 2100.

Modern Architecture Float Ecopolis Lilypad concept design - kind of neat. But this is awesome! I'd be on the bottom floor all the time!

Though none of his arresting concepts have yet come to fruition, Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut may be the most prolific designer of fantastic future cities. Callebaut designed the Lilypad, basically a giant ocean-bound football stadium carpeted with foliage, as an unmoored refugee camp for people displaced by rising seas and other impending environmental hazards.
