Have you ever used a Vowel Tree in your school room?  A Vowel Tree helps children develop the pre-reading skill, word blends.  If a Vowel Tree is new to you, here are a few tips. Start by placing one consonant from your moveable alphabet, such as ”r” in front of “a”.  Say “ra” to the child.  Move down the trunk until you’ve demonstrated all of the word blends: “re”, “ri”, “ro”, “ru”.  Let the child take a turn.  Start by providing them with a limited amount of consonants.  As they grow ready for the next step, they can start selecting any consonant to create their own word blends. After they have the two letter word blends down pat, the Vowel Tree can be used for early reading.  Add a “n” to the end and you have “ran”.  It’s not as important that they create correct words, but that they are sounding out the correct phonetic sounds.

The 48 picture words that come in the Elkonin set are mostly CVC - 13 have digraphs like sh and ck. Additionally, there are at least 7 images for each short vowel, perfect for sorting with the vowel line. Complete movable alphabet is also included.
