Tomas Alfredson - Let The Right One In - The book is phenomenal and the film is a masterpiece. So beautiful, strange word to use for such a horrifying subject matter but the connection between the main characters is just perfection and so pure. It's the best movie I've seen in a really long time, it truly is a work of art. And I love that the title is a reference to a Morrissey song.

THE TURIN HORSE. The last film by Hungarian master Béla Tarr is a bleak and haunting swan song to the end of the world. Tarr has now dedicated himself to teaching. Shaking his hand after the film's AFI Film Festival screening, and thanking him for his final gift is a moment I will cherish forever. Fred Keleman's precise cinematography deserves special praise.

Directed by Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr (in collaboration with Agnes Hranitzky), The Turin Horse is a work stripped-down to the essence of cinema while shining a mesmerizing beauty seldom seen in films. The film is proof of a filmmaker’s deep understanding of time and space while still adhering to composition—characteristics of film that can be taken to full advantage when the camera is in proper hands—and that same understanding applies to the use of sound.

"Tokyo Story". Yasujiro Ozu's most famous movie, this is THE classic movie about older parents visiting their children who don't quite have time for them anymore. Ozu can be harder to get into than the more accessible movies of Kurosawa, but it's worth it.
This is, without a doubt, one of cinema’s most exquisite, profound and aching paeans to parenthood, marriage, ageing, demise and life itself. We are fortunate to have films like Tokyo Story, a work borne out of compassion and respect, that allows us to become better human beings – one of those rare celluloids that will make you weep buckets and then reach for the handset to call your parents and tell them you’re grateful for everything. Rating: A+
Tokyo Story is a 1953 Japanese film directed by Yasujiro Ozu. It tells the story of an aging couple who travel to Tokyo to visit their grown children. The film contrasts the behavior of their children, who are too busy to pay them much attention, and their widowed daughter-in-law, who treats them with kindness. It is often regarded as Ozu's masterpiece, and has appeared several times in the British Film Institute lists of the greatest films ever made.

Without a doubt the best Belgium film of 2012 - a dark, sinister story poised by grand performances and genius cinematography
Bullhead (2011) : Absolutely one of the best foreign movies. The acting is breathtaking and the story is compelling.
2012 Movie 2: Bullhead. Oscar-nominee Best Foreign Movie. 2nd time I watched it, and it was just as intense as the first time. This very dark story about the Belgian hormone mafia takes its time to set the scene, but once you understand the reason why Jacky is who he is, the film grips you and doesn't let go until the credits. The cinematography is clean cut and simple, but brilliant at the same time. The country side has never looked so menacing. Brilliant performance by Matthias Schoenaerts.

Based on two true stories, Julia and Julie is the first major film to be based on a blog, contrasting the past life of famous chef Julia Child (Meryl Streep) in the early years of her culinary career with the near–present life of Julie Powell (Amy Adams) – an underappreciated cubicle worker living above a pizza shop in Queens – who sets herself the goal of cooking all 524 recipes in Child’s book in 365 days.

Before Sunrise is a 1995 romantic drama film directed by Richard Linklater and written by Linklater and Kim Krizan. The film follows Jesse (Ethan Hawke), a young American, and Céline (Julie Delpy), a young French woman, who meet on a train and disembark in Vienna, where they spend the night walking around the city and getting to know each other. The plot is minimalist, since aside from walking and talking, not much happens. The two characters' ideas and perspectives on life and love are detailed.
On his way to Vienna, American Jesse (Ethan Hawke) meets Celine (Julie Delpy), a student returning to Paris. After long conversations forge a surprising connection between them, Jesse convinces Celine to get off the train with him in Vienna. Since his flight to the U.S. departs the next morning and he has no money for lodging, they wander the city together, taking in the experiences of Vienna and each other. As the night progresses, their bond makes separating in the morning a difficult choice.
1995. American Ethan Hawke & French student Julie Delpy meet on a train, share a mutual attraction, & w/ <24 hrs before having to go their separate ways, the two explore their feelings & Vienna at the same time. First things first -- George Clooney is gorgeous in this. But I am baffled by the high marks this film is getting. It is a fine story and well told, but this is not as sharply observed as most of Payne's movies are. If you've never seen an Alexander Payne movie, start with Election or Sideways first.
An emotionally moving film about the close space in which love and pain co-exist for another in one's heart. Highly recommend both the movie and book. The Descendants (2011) - didn't remember hearing anything about this before. Enjoyed watching it today. It's not a big-obvious-lots-of-stuff-happening kind of film but it keeps your attention. Nice to see Shailene prove she can really act & George isn't being Sexiest Man Alive - he's just a guy (and a good actor!).
The Descendants 2011 Loss is not relative & is w/o distinction. Loss of a relationship or loss thru death the pain is the same. Those left behind must move on. The film captured this perfectly for me. It does not give answers. It simply shows people going through the experience of loss. Having gone through something similar all I can say is that the film rings true. It touched me and left me looking back at the person I moved on from. Film may be tuff for some to watch but it should be required.
