People don’t choose to be atheist because they’re too lazy to find out more about religion. This post was inspired by a recent survey by the the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, which found that atheists and agnostics know more basic facts about the Bible than either Protestants or Catholics. (Though I don’t know how reliable this survey is, I thought it was interesting.)

Yes, I'm an atheist. No, I'm not clueless about religion.

Atheism, Religion, God is Imaginary. For those who don't know me well, let me tell you a little secret. I am an atheist. That doesn't mean that I hate your god or Jesus. It simply means that I have not been presented with sufficient compelling evidence to conclude that either exists. The same goes for: Thor, Jupiter, Poseidon, Mithra, Ra, Shiva, Mars, Zues, Venus... and all the rest....

I really don't see it as a decision. I COULD not decide to believe, I tried for 20+ years with ALL I had. ~Robert

Unfortunately, most Christians do not get that if is about acceptance and love and not hatred and a "who is right". For me, I want to understand what all religions think and what atheists think and dispell what is misrepresented in Christianity without cramming it down someone's throat.

I am a math agnostic (Math could possibly exist, I just can't prove it, and if it does exist it isn't for me.)

"I realize this is extremely simplistic - and one-sided given that it doesn't say anything negative about atheists and doesn't say anything positive about religions. However, it does line out some of the terrible problems with various belief systems, none of which, in my mind, is balanced by the "good" of religion."

The greatest tragedy in mankind's entire history may be the hijacking of morality by religion. ~Arthur C. Clarke

An intelligent person does not need the promise of heaven to see the merit in good deeds.

Interesting survey, and from a reputable source, Pew Research, click through. Atheists performed best in the religious knowledge survey. I think if you are raised believing something, you never investigate it and that can be a reason why atheists know more academically about many religions than their adherents do. I know that I research the things I don't believe in far more extensively than I do the things I do believe in, mainly because I don't want to make faulty assumptions.

Atheism, Religion, Christianity, God is Imaginary, The Bible. Buy a Bible, never read it and you're a good Christian. Buy a Bible, read parts of it and you become a pious sonofabitch. Buy a Bible, study it thoroughly and you become an atheist, hated by every Christian.
