The subject of my new novel (!) The Gates of Paradise by Ghiberti. After reading and studying these doors at a distance, seeing them in person was a dream come true. Stayed in a room that was directly above the workshop where these were made in Firenze. Out of this world experience!
The Gates of Hell ~ an ambitious & astonishing work by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin that was never realized in his lifetime; he worked on the doors off & on for 37 years, but never actually finished. The sculpture exists in two versions, one of which was cast in bronze posthumously from reconstructed plaster casts. The work stands almost 30 ft high x 12 ft wide, with over 180 figures representing themes from Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. #art #sculpture
Around the corner I have a friend, In this great city that has no end, Yet the days go by and weeks rush on, And before I know it, a year is gone. And I never see my old friends face, For life is a swift and terrible race, He knows I like him just as well, As in the days when I rang his bell. - Poem by -Charles Hanson Towne (1877-1949). Face by: Michelangelo - Giuliano de Medici.
