Mitchell wrote this novel because she wanted to show how different women managed to survive the American Civil War. Thus, Melanie, Scarlett, India, and Ellen. These women each coped differently to outlive the greatest war of their century in America, and the fact that Scarlett stood so high above the others is a testament to her larger-than-life validity.
