Set against the dramatic backdrop of the American Civil War, Margaret Mitchell's epic love story is an unforgettable tale of love and loss, of a nation mortally divided and its people forever changed. At the heart of all this chaos is the story of beautiful, ruthless Scarlett 'O' Hara and the dashing soldier of fortune, Rhett Butler. Scarlett (Vivien Leigh) in Tara - Gone with the Wind - Autant en emporte le vent (Victor Fleming - 1939) #movie #cinema
Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara in 'Gone With The Wind' (1939). The opening scenes of the film where originally filmed first in the production, but reshot near the end. After working for months on the demanding shoot Vivien Leigh had become visibly haggard, and needed a break from filming before she could come back to play Scarlett at her youngest and most pampered. The white dress was added for the reshoot to emphasize the sense of Scarlett's virginity and innocence at the start of the film.

The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough - just re-read this book in 2010 and it still moves me.
Great! It's also on my list of favorite movies (actually a mini-series). Intense love.
Colleen McCullough's magnificent saga of dreams, struggles, dark passions, and forbidden love in the Australian outback has enthralled readers the world over. The Thorn Birds is a chronicle of three generations of Clearys—an indomitable clan of ranchers carving lives from a beautiful, hard land while contending with the bitterness, frailty, and secrets that penetrate their family. It is a poignant love story, a powerful epic of struggle and sacrifice, a celebration of individuality and spirit.

Still Alice, by Lisa Genova (Book Club Kits). A well-researched novel that deals with the impact of early-onset Alzheimer's disease on a 50-year-old professor. Her intelligence and understanding makes her deterioration all the more terrifying as she anticipates everything the disease will take from her.
Still Alice, by Lisa Genova. Prepare for what is likely to be the scariest book of your whole life.
Still Alice is a compelling debut novel about a 50-year-old woman's sudden descent into early onset Alzheimer's disease, written by first-time author Lisa Genova, who holds a Ph.D in neuroscience from Harvard University. A great read; I highly recommend this book.
Still Alice- Lisa Genova. A woman and her family struggles with early onset Alzheimers disease.
I read this for the second time as our book club pick. The story resonated with me just as much on the second reading. Dr. Alice Howland, a well respected Harvard professor, begins to lose her edge both at work and at home. She discovers much to her chagrin that she is in the beginning stages of early onset Alzheimer's Disease. Lisa Genova explores this disease from Alice's perspective and allows the reader to feel the heartbreaking deterioration that the Alzheimer's patient might experience.
"Still Alice" by Lisa Genova - Sounds heartbreaking, but worth reading. (Need to Read)

Jen Hatmaker - 7 An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess (book to read). This explains it beautifully. Life changing. She said in her blog: "...We learned that the easiest place to stay comfortably off-mission is in the western church, where we had been doing a lovely job of serving the saved and ignoring everyone else. ". Wow. That hits home.
Seven. 7. will (could) totally change your perspective, and maybe your life! SO good. 7 An experimental mutiny against excess - Jen Hatmaker
7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess by Jen Hatmaker. A challenging, thought-provoking, laughter-inducing, powerfully good read. If you don't want to change a thing about your life, you shouldn't read this book.
7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess was a very convicting read for me. Jen Hatmaker, along with her husband, kids, and group of friends (all participating in various ways) spent 7 months abstaining from areas of excess. Jen touches on the categories of food, clothes, spending, media, possessions, waste, and stress during the 7 month experiment.

Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell So much better than the movie, although they couldn't have casted it any better.
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell ~ Until recently, this was my all-time favorite book, but is now a close second. Not much can compare to the story of Scarlett and her life journey through the Civil War and Reconstruction. The characters, places, and times just come alive as you read!
Gone With the Wind (1936) by Margaret Mitchell - a best-selling novel and a Pulitzer winner about the Civil War that inspired a movie that inspired epic studio production
-Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. I'm going to be honest this is far from my favorite book. It's ridiculously long and Scarlett O'Hara is such an annoying character that you really love to hate, while simultaneously hoping that she comes to her freaking senses and realizes she loves Rhett. It's painful. But it is a classic that I think if you can handle it, go for it.
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell #MargaretMitchell
Gone with the Wind is a novel written by Margaret Mitchell, first published in 1936. The story is set in Clayton County, Georgia, and Atlanta during the American Civil War and Reconstruction era. It depicts the experiences of Scarlett O'Hara, the spoiled daughter of a well-to-do plantation owner, who must use every means at her disposal to come out of the poverty she finds herself in after Sherman's March to the Sea. A historical novel, the story is a Bildungsroman or coming-of-age story, with the title taken from a poem written by Ernest Dowson. Gone with the Wind was popular with American readers from the onset and was the top American fiction bestseller in the year it was published and in 1937. As of 2014, a Harris poll found it to be the second favorite book of American readers, just behind the Bible. More than 30 million copies have been printed worldwide. Written from the perspective of the slaveholder, Gone with the Wind is Southern plantation fiction. Its portrayal of slavery and African Americans is controversial, as well as its use of a racial epithet and ethnic slurs. However, the novel has become a reference point for subsequent writers about the South, both black and white. Scholars at American universities refer to it in their writings, interpret and study it. The novel has been absorbed into American popular culture. Margaret Mitchell was imaginative in the use of color symbolism, especially the colors red and green, which surround Scarlett O'Hara. Mitchell identified the primary theme as survival. She left the ending speculative for the reader, however. She was often asked what became of her lovers, Rhett and Scarlett. She did not know, and said, "For all I know, Rhett may have found someone else who was less difficult." Two sequels authorized by Mitchell's estate were published more than a half century later. A parody was also produced. Mitchell received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for the book in 1937. It was adapted into a 1939 American film. The book is often read or misread through the film. Gone with the Wind is the only novel by Mitchell published during her lifetime

An adult Amir opens the novel in the present-day United States with a vague reference to one of these events, and then the novel flashes back to Amir's childhood in Afghanistan.
