Dr. Karl Franz Gebhardt was a brigadier general of the Waffen-SS, personal physician to Himmler, and a practitioner of experiments on concentration camp inmates. Gebhardt tortured to death dozens of prisoners by infecting them in order to prove early antibiotics did not work on gas gangrene. He also tried to transplant limps of prisoners to German war wounded. After the war, Gebhardt was sentenced to death and hanged in 1948.
