what-our-mothers-didn't tell us, hockingly discriminatory attitudes towards women who wish to have children without neglecting them (as exemplified by Hillary Clinton’s remark, ‘I suppose I could’ve stayed home and baked cookies’). And it is these attitudes that have made it difficult for a woman today to occupy either sphere of work or home completely happily, without feeling guilty and exhausted in one or insecure and underappreciated in the other.”

Sarah Reads Too Much: "Promise Not To Tell" by Jennifer McMahon. The very night that Kate Cypher has returned home to care for her Alzheimer's afflicted mother, a young girl is horrifically murdered nearby. It is eerily reminiscent of how Kate's secret best friend Del was murdered 30 years ago. They must be somehow connected, but how? Why? Is Kate herself the connection?
Promise Not to Tell: A Novel by Jennifer McMahon http://www.amazon.com/dp/0061143316/ref=cm_sw_r_pi_dp_MBLSvb1NNXTBT
Promise Not To Tell by Jennifer McMahon. Forty-one-year-old school nurse Kate Cypher has returned home to rural Vermont to care for her mother who's afflicted with Alzheimer's. On the night she arrives, a young girl is murdered—a horrific crime that eerily mirrors another from Kate's childhood.
Promise Not to Tell by Jennifer McMahon: love a good mystery. wonder if this is worth reading!
Promise Not to Tell: A Novel: Jennifer McMahon: Part mystery-thriller and part ghost story, McMahon's well-paced debut alternates smoothly between past and present. 41-year-old Kate Cypher, a divorced Seattle school nurse, returns to New Hope, the decaying Vermont hippie commune where she grew up, to visit her elderly mother, Jean, who's suffering from Alzheimer's. Kate has avoided New Hope since the grizzly, unsolved murder of her fifth-grade friend, Del Griswold, 31 years earlier.
Book Description Forty-one-year-old school nurse Kate Cypher has returned home to rural Vermont to care for her mother who's afflicted with Alzheimer's. On the night she arrives, a young girl is murdered—a horrific crime that eerily mirrors another from Kate's childhood. Three decades earlier, her dirt-poor friend Del —shunned and derided by classmates as "Potato Girl"—was brutally slain. Del's killer was never found, while the victim has since achieved immortality in local legends and ghost stories. Now, as this new murder investigation draws Kate irresistibly in, her past and present collide in terrifying, unexpected ways. Because nothing is quite what it seems . . . and the grim specters of her youth are far from forgotten. More than just a murder mystery, Jennifer McMahon's extraordinary debut novel, Promise Not to Tell, is a story of friendship and family, devotion and betrayal—tautly written, deeply insightful, beautifully evocative, and utterly unforgettable.

On my reading list. My favorite book ever!!!! Beautifully descriptive novel of the role of four women living in Masada in 70-73 CE. Powerful images!
The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman: a beautifully written novel of historical fiction about 900 Jews who held out against the Roman army at Masada around 70 CE.
"The Dovekeepers" by Alice Hoffman -- Currently reading this amazing book, Historical Fiction set at Masada
In 70 C.E., 900 Jews held out against armies of Romans on Masada. The Dovekeepers is Alice Hoffman's most ambitious and mesmerizing novel, a tour de force of imagination and research. www.historyandwomen.com/2011/10/dovekeepers-by-alice-hoffman.html
The Dovekeepers, by Alice Hoffman. After touring Masada in Israel, this book came alive. It's a novel after the fall of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. and the Jewish zealots who secured themselves in Herod's old fortress near the Dead Sea for nearly 5 years. This novel is based on lots of research and history, and it's powerfully written!
"The Dovekeepers" by Alice Hoffman -- Historical Fiction -- Another wonderful book. I learned so much about a time, place and culture. It was beautifully written.
The Dovekeepers: A Novel by Alice Hoffman #ThriftBooksTop10 The Dovekeepers is my All-Time Favorite book. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to read something that matters. A deep, meaningful and perhaps mostly true story that will stay with you and make you think about it for a very long time. *PS I just noticed you can buy this book at Thriftbooks for less than 4.00 right now - so for the love of all that's good, get a copy NOW! :)
The Dovekeeper... excellent. Possible the only book of Alice Hoffman's thats worth reading.

Dinah, the only daughter of Jacob, narrates this novel, explaining how the women of her family had their own religious practices that ran counter to the beliefs the men upheld. Through Dinah's voice, this novel imagines the women's stories that the Bible doesn't tell. To call it provocative and rebellious is an understatement; it pushes against patriarchy and suggests an ancient and empowering role for women and women's sexuality.

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant - I never would have picked this up on my own! Thanks Book Club- I loved it!
ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS: I can't find a single other person that would read it to discuss it with me! Worth reading is an understatement for this book. It combines biblical ideas/stories with a more appropriate, yet fictional storyline. It takes the story of Dinah and puts a "what if" she wasn't raped, but "what if" she fell in love. A beautiful, beautiful story . It also combines the idea that women used to celebrate their monthly cycle together. So nice!
The Red Tent- Katie loved this, it is her favorite book. I didn't care for it so much.

Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague by Geraldine Brooks “A vividly imagined and strangely consoling tale of hope in a time of despair.” —O
2002 - Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague by Geraldine Brooks - Eighteen-year-old Anna Frith tells the story of her remote English village, Eyam, which was infected by the plague in 1666 and where, persuaded by their vicar, the townspeople decided to quarantine themselves.
Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague: Geraldine Brooks: A story that reminds us of our ability to survive through the worst...
4. Anna Frith in Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks: Like The Scarlet Letter, this novel tells the tale of a woman on the margins of society, yet whom society cannot deny. Young Anna must dodge both the plague and the conventions of 17th century English village life. Brooks considers the matters that still vex women today -- from gossip to social status to love -- while being true to the setting and time.

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. This is one of my favorite books. After I read the book, I always watch the movie.
Rebecca | author Daphne du Maurier | From "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again" to "And the ashes blew towards us with the salt wind of the sea" a classic tale worth reading over & over again.
Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier: a young and naive woman marries a wealthy, worldly widower. She is haunted by the reminders everywhere of his beautiful first wife, Rebecca. A beautifully-written classic that keeps one guessing to the end. The movie starred Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine and is also excellent.
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier ~ The movie based on this book was great! Now I need to read the book ~dd

The Help. If you haven't seen the film yet, read the book first! Even if you've seen the movie, it's a book worth reading.
Wonderful book and movie had the essence of the book...my Southern friends related to the characters....
The Help My favorite book and a well done movie. Some of the characters remind me of people in modern day world which isn't really a good thing. Mrs. Hilly the ultimate bully!
The Help, by Kathryn Stockett- Also one of my all- time favorite movies, this an incredible piece of heartbreaking literature, with just the right amount of humor and excitement to keep you on the edge of your seat. Skeeter returns home from college to her beautiful home in Mississippi, eager to get a start on her career as a journalist. But she discovers that what she needs to write about is right under her nose. And it may spark a controversy big enough to endanger her and everyone she loves.
