    practicing letter writing in salt/sand with flashcards. I always envisaged gluing letter shapes onto card, sprinkling sand, shaking off then drying. Kids can 'feel' the shape of the letters. Very tactile. I guess you could cut letter shapes out of sand paper for a similar affect.
