Evidently a very good translation of the book Rachel's mother is reading in Love by the Letter - $5.99 The Inferno (The Divine Comedy) eBook: John Ciardi, Dante Alighieri, Archibald MacAllister, Archibald T. MacAllister: Kindle Store
Inferno is the first part of Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy. Made up of 34 cantos, it tells the story of a man named Dante who found himself in a dark wood. Unable to find his way out because of three beasts who blocked his way, Virgil, sent by Beatrice, comes to his rescue. The poet tells him that they must go through hell in order for Dante to return to earth.
The Inferno by Dante Alighieri, book (or poem) one of his masterwork The Divine Comedy. I was a strange kid, I read this when I was in MS and loved it!
The Inferno - Dante Alighieri “In the middle of the journey of our life I found myself within a dark woods where the straight way was lost.”
If you're going to read any of the Divine Comedy, make sure you read the John Ciardi version.
If you're going to read any of the Divine Comedy, make sure you read the John Ciardi version. I read the Inferno and really enjoyed it; his writing style and flow are how I would imagine the great poet would have wanted it. When I went to read Purgatorio I accidentally grabbed a non-Ciardi translation and it was so, so tedious... I couldn't even finish it. Ignorantly I had no idea the translator could make such a world of difference... glad I learned my lesson.
The Inferno - Dante... Probably my all-time favorite book.

The Divine Comedy (Italian: Commedia, later christened “Divina” by Giovanni Boccaccio), written by Dante Alighieri between 1308 and his death in 1321, is widely considered the central epic poem of Italian literature, the last great work of literature of the Middle Ages and the first great work of the Renaissance.
Read IT! The most famous work of Dante Alighieri, and one of the greatest masterpieces of the world literature, The Divine Comedy describes Dante’s descent into Hell, passing through the Purgatory, and finally his Paradise ascension, to end with the apotheosis of the Divine union. In his voyage to meet the Divinity, Dante meets famous people from the past, carefully and skillfully placed at various levels of the world after death.
The Divine Comedy (Italian: Divina Commedia) is an epic poem written by Dante Alighieri. It is widely considered the preeminent work of Italian literature, and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. The poem's imaginative and allegorical vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century. It is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.

Dante Alighieri's portrait by Sandro Botticelli. Tempera 1495 "Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a forest dark, For the straight foreward pathway had been lost." - Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri*
Sandro Botticelli, Portrait of Dante, c.1495 Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) was a Florentine poet of the Middle Ages/very early Renaissance. He is best known for writing the three-part - 'Inferno' (Hell), 'Purgatorio' (Purgatory) and 'Paradiso' (Paradise) - epic poem, the ‘Divine Comedy’. However, Dante is also famous for his love-at-first-sight infatuation with Beatrice, his muse, whom he first met when he was just nine years old.
Portrait of Dante, c.1495, by Sandro Botticelli; Durante degli Alighieri, simply called Dante c. 1265–1321, was a major Italian poet of the Middle Ages. His Divine Comedy, originally called Comedìa and later called Divina by Boccaccio, is widely considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature. In Botticelli's portrait, Dante wears a laurel wreath, a symbol of distinction and glory.
Dante Alighieri by Botticelli - Dante Alighieri Dante's Inferno led to Dan Brown's novel of the same name, and he is important to this story. Born in Florence around 1265, Dante was later banned from that city for resisting the pope's political authority there. After the Templars began to be arrested in 1307, were put on trial in Italy and other countries, and hundreds of them were burned to death, the words of Dante's Inferno came pouring out of his pen.
ROOD. Sandro Botticelli, 'Dante', 1495.

It was also quite interesting to see how Dante ordered the various types of sinners. He makes a difference between the sins of the intellect and sins of action. The Inferno was divided into Upper and Lower Hell with Upper Hell being for sins of Incontinence (essentially lack of control),
Circles keep coming up in rehearsals (largely to do with structure!) -- I thought the set could resemble the circles of Hell from above?

Comedy, Circled Earth, Cities Maps, Dante 8217 S Cosmology, Fantasy Maps Cities, Adopted Aristotelian Thomistic, Bodies Circled, Books Beautiful Letter
In the Divine Comedy, Dante adopted Aristotelian-Thomistic cosmology. Earth came to absolute rest at the center of the creation. The heavenly bodies circled Earth. Empyrean Heaven, or paradise, existed beyond the last sphere (that of the fixed stars). Hell took shape In the bowels of the Earth. Purgatory, located between Earth and the Moon, appeared between Heaven and Hell.
A heliocentric Universe was impossible for the Church to adopt. In the end, medieval cosmology centers on the balance of angelic sphere and the earthy realm. One such cosmology is found in Dante's `The Divine Comedy'

The Arabian Nights - Full of mischief, valor, ribaldry, and romance, The Arabian Nights has enthralled readers for centuries. These are the tales that saved the life of Shahrazad, whose husband, the king, executed each of his wives after a single night of marriage. Beginning an enchanting story each evening, Shahrazad always withheld the ending: A thousand and one nights later, her life was spared forever.

The Epic Journey- In Dante's Divine Comedy, Dante goes through an epic journey to Heaven where he reunites with God. He goes through Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise (Heaven). On his journey, he faces many hardships and obstacles until he reaches his end. His journey is similar to Odysseus' because both of them go on a journey that is very difficult.
