This article has great tips for getting up stains. I used the detergent method on a 5-year-old cat puke stain that had already been professionally steamed cleaned. After I applied the "detergent" from the article, I put a washcloth over the spot, dampened it with the mist from my iron, and ironed it. The carpet looks new. In that spot.
Homemade carpet powder , also a reader wrote:According to a friend, if you add a cup of borax to this mixture it will kill any bugs that may be in your carpet! (fleas, etc!)Another said:I use nutmeg or clove ground with baking soda, and everyone can't find why my house smells so inviting and homey.
n light carpets, I've also found that the Clorox "pour directly on fabric" bleach works well on those tough spots. Pour onto carpet, let sit 2-3 minutes and then wash with water. It helps if you have a wet vac or carpet cleaner of some kind to pull all of the chemical from the carpet, but not necessary. Took out some nasty stains in our carpet like magic!
