More muscle mass means more calories burnt while sleeping, if you just want to be lean and toned, this comes from low fat. In getting your fat percentage to low, strength training will definitely assist in this process, running alone everyday will NOT. So girls, dont be afraid to get out their and hit the gym with a weight (or even body weight)
