The famous poet Walt Whitman volunteered as a nurse in Washington, D.C. during the Civil War. He dressed wounds and tried to comfort the wounded men, and found inspiration in such suffering and a greater faith in American democracy. He described the soldiers as possessing "incredible dauntlessness" and sacrifice, and he wrote poems describing the tragedy of the war.

"A claim for equality of material position can be met only by a government with totalitarian powers." -- F.A. Hayek
From the fact that people are very different it follows that, if we treat them equally, the result must be inequality in their actual position, and that the only way to place them in an equal position would be to treat them differently. Equality before the law and material equality are therefore not only different but are in conflict with each other; and we can achieve either one or the other, but not both at the same time. - Friedrich Hayek

timemagazine: Photo by General Photographic Agency/Getty Images Today TIME pays tribute to the trailblazers, visionaries and cultural ambassadors who defined a nation: The 20 Most Influential Americans of All Time. Pictured: Professor Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955), mathematical physicist at home in 1925. He was the greatest mind and paramount icon of our age, the kindly, absentminded professor whose wild halo of hair, piercing eyes, engaging humanity and extraordinary brilliance made his face a symbol and his name a synonym for genius: Albert Einstein. This list comes from the new TIME book The 100 Most Influential People of All Time, which profiles spiritual icons, leaders, explorers, visionaries and cultural titans throughout human history.
Pictured is Albert Einstein. You can display a photo of him in the classroom. He can be viewed as a role model for the students and assure the students that he made many mistakes ( a lot of trial and error). Let the students know that people can make mistakes. Using a famous role model is extremely helpful. A reading strategy that can be used is a quick write. Students can write down a short paragraph about a famous mathematician.
