This image of the spiral galaxy Messier 101 (also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy) is a composite of data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Spitzer Space Telescope. Viewing this galaxy in the infrared allows us to see areas of star formation within the galaxies arms.

One of the last entries in Charles Messier's famous catalog, big, beautiful spiral galaxy M101 is definitely not one of the least. About 170,000 light-years across, this galaxy is enormous, almost twice the size of our own Milky Way Galaxy. M101 was also one of the original spiral nebulae observed with Lord Rosse's large 19th century telescope, the Leviathan of Parsontown. In contrast, this multiwavelength view of the large island universe is a composite of images recorded by space-based |

Image of the Pinwheel Galaxy, M101, July 17, 2012: Located in the constellation of Ursa Major, 21 million light-years from Earth, the Pinwheel Galaxy is roughly 70 percent larger than our own Milky Way galaxy and has a diameter of about 170,000 light-years. This image of the Pinwheel Galaxy, or M101, combines data in the infrared, visible, ultraviolet and X-rays from four of NASA’s space telescopes. The view shows that both young and old stars are evenly distributed along M101′s tightly...
